2 Requirement for a strategy Crime and Disorder Act 1998, amended by Police Reform Act 2002: –a statutory duty on Responsible Authorities to work together and with other agencies and communities to tackle crime, drugs, antisocial behaviour and fear of crime –required to produce and implement a strategy every three years

3 Safe Newcastle Strategy Work took place in 2004/2005, overseen by the ‘Bringing Together’ group on behalf of the former NCSP and DAT Followed three key stages as laid out in government guidance: –Audit –Consultation –Strategy Development

4 Audit Compiled relevant data from the period April 2001 – March 2004 A wide range of primary and secondary data about crime, disorder, antisocial behaviour, alcohol and drugs and their impact on individuals, families and communities Resulted in key priorities being identified

5 Consultation Requirement to consult upon the findings of the audit Took place between Oct and Dec 2004 Different methods used to gather views and opinions of people who live, work, visit or socialise in Newcastle e.g: –questionnaire in City Life –street interviews –focus groups

6 Strategy development At Whole Systems Event members of former NCSP and DAT and other partners Considered: –Findings of audit –Findings of consultation –National and regional priorities Developed 9 priority outcomes for Safe Newcastle Strategy

7 Summary of Priority Outcomes (1) Acquisitive crime is reduced Supply, use and harm caused by drugs are reduced Misuse and harm caused by alcohol are reduced Anti-social behaviour is reduced Hate crime, domestic violence and harm to vulnerable groups are reduced

8 Summary of Priority Outcomes (2) Children and young people are respected and protected City centre is safe and vibrant Transport and travel systems are safe and accessible Community confidence is increased through communication and participation

9 Action Planning (Community Safety Outcomes) Integrated action plans that take an holistic approach by identifying work in a number of areas: –Social prevention –Situational prevention –Support/treatment/diversion For victims For witnesses For offenders –Enforcement
