1 Community Strategy Review Seminar September 15 th 2009 Camden Community Empowerment Network

2 Seminar overview 131 groups contributed case studies and feedback on six Community Strategy themes through seminars, outreach visits, telephone and email between April 2008 and March 2009. The activities aimed to: profile voluntary and community sector work and views in Local Strategic Partnership reports and debate; keep the Community Strategy vision ‘live’ and connect people with the LSP; provide opportunity for ongoing consultation on Community Strategy delivery. Information about 52 different VCS initiatives highlighted approaches and outcomes contributing to achieving the Community Strategy vision. Areas of concern and opportunities for improving outcomes were identified throughout the process.

3 Opportunities for improving outcomes More ‘joining up’ of services, improving communication and knowledge, and embedding holistic approaches. Emphasis on community development approaches and outreach work. Relevant and less burdensome monitoring, and progress and improve outcomes based commissioning and contracts. A more creative approach to housing – provision of, and engaging providers in addressing health, crime, environment etc.

4 A thriving and safe part of London and gateway to Europe. April 2008. (p.6.) COMMUNITY STRATEGY PRIORITIES Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, particularly robbery and violent crime. Reduce fear of crime. Reduce adult and young offenders who re-offend. Reduce harm caused by alcohol and drugs. Increase numbers of drug users in drug treatment programmes. Prevent children and young people becoming involved in bullying, anti-social behaviour and crime. WHAT HAS CHANGED? WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NOW?

5 Improving health and well-being across the borough. May 2008. (p.12.) COMMUNITY STRATEGY PRIORITIES Lifestyle change through physical activity, stopping smoking and healthy eating. Involvement in learning, cultural and recreational activity. Well-being of people with disabling physical or mental illness. Improve life chances for children and young people. Opportunities for all to stay healthy, keep learning and have full and active lives. WHAT HAS CHANGED ? WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NOW ?

6 Increasing access to skills, education, training and jobs. September 2008. (p.16.) COMMUNITY STRATEGY PRIORITIES Improve overall employment rate and reduce dependence on state benefits. Increase participation in skills and training amongst priority groups including incapacity benefit recipients and lone parents. Increase 16-18 year olds in education, employment or training. Improve school attendance. WHAT HAS CHANGED ? WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NOW ?

7 Working together to manage a growing population. October 2008. (p.19.) COMMUNITY STRATEGY PRIORITIES Increase provision of affordable housing and make supported housing work better for everyone. Improve quality and availability of social housing. Bring empty properties back into use. Prevent homelessness. THE SEMINAR ALSO ADDRESSED LOCAL DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK APPROACHES. WHAT HAS CHANGED ? Improve state of Camden Town’s physical environment, including roads, pavements and lighting. Use enforcement and environmental improvements to change the area’s reputation, together with better marketing of Camden Town as a place for everyone. WHAT HAS CHANGED ? WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NOW ?

9 Benefiting from cultural and leisure opportunities, including the London Olympics. March 2009. (p.28.) COMMUNITY STRATEGY PRIORITIES Resident satisfaction with cultural and recreational activities. Resident satisfaction with sport and leisure facilities. Increase 5-16 year olds taking part in at least 2 hours of organised physical activity a week. Develop extended services around schools to help children and young people enjoy and achieve. WHAT HAS CHANGED ? WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN NOW ?
