Battle of Galveston What happened in 1862? – A Union warship appeared off the coast of Galveston. The North had begun a blockade to stop trade. What is a blockade? – Closes a port by positioning ships to keep people or supplies from moving in or out. In 1862, who occupied the city of Galveston? – Federal Troops

Battle of Galveston What did Texas do in 1863? (Describe the plan in detail) – Confederate Texans converted two steamboats into warships. Bales of Cotton were placed on the ships to protect the soldiers. The warships attacked the Union ships. A Union ships was captured and the Union soldiers surrendered. Who controlled the port at the end of the Battle of Galveston? – Confederates What is the significance of the battle? – The defense of the Texas coast was one of the Confederacy’s greatest successes.

Sabine Pass What happened on September 8 th ? (explain in detail) – Union ships drew near, they came in range of confederate guns. Cannons in the fort disabled two Union ships and forced the other ships to retreat. Who did the Texans capture? – 300 Union soldiers

Battle of Palmito Ranch Who surrendered? – General Robert E. Lee Why didn’t Texas stop fighting when they did find out about the surrender? – Some Confederates refused to surrender

Palmito Ranch What happened on May 13, 1865? (explain in detail) – Union Colonel Theodore H. Barrett attacked Confederate forces at Palmito Ranch. The Confederates called for reinforcements, and 300 Calvary arrived the next morning. Surprising Barrett and his men, Texans captured more than 100 of Barrett’s men. What happened when Texas was victorious at Palmito Ranch? – They received orders to disband their armies and the Union still won the Civil War.
