Standard Grade English Course Summary Grades will be awarded for three specific areas- READING WRITING TALKING An overall grade will be awarded by the exam board (the SQA) based on an aggregate of the grades awarded for each of the above areas.

Coursework in school and the external exam. The final grade is awarded based on coursework completed in class and an external exam which is sat in May of S4. Grades fall into three categories- CREDIT = GRADES 1 and 2 GENERAL = GRADES 3 and 4 FOUNDATION = GRADES 5 and 6

Coursework completed in school. Every pupil must produce a folio of five essays by February of 4th year. This is sent to the exam board and it is marked externally by English teachers (not your own teacher). The folio consists of- »Three critical evaluations »Two writing essays ( based on different kinds of genre e.g.personal writing report writing, short story, discursive writing etc.)

The External Exam The external exam consists of three exam papers all sat under exam conditions- A Writing Paper A General Close Reading Paper A Credit or Foundation Close Reading Paper The Reading and Writing grades are based on a combination of the folio and the external exam.

TALKING Talk is assessed in Standard Grade and makes up a third of the final grade which means that it is very important. The talk grade is made up of- Solo Talk and Group Discussion The talk grade is given by the class teacher based on the solo talks and group discussions carried out over S3 and S4. Talk is a compulsory part of the course. If it is not completed an award at Standard Grade for English cannot be achieved.

SUMMARY Folio = three reading essays and two writing essays. External Exams = one timed writing paper and two timed close reading papers. Talk = solo talks and group discussions. Credit = Grades 1 and 2 General = Grades 3 and 4 Foundation = Grades 5 and 6
