1 National 4 & 5 English Course Outline

2 S4 English Course There are 2 courses: National 4 English and Literacy

3 National 4 Literacy You must show that you can do the following using or understanding language accurately and well: Read Write (more than 300 words) Listen Talk Texts will be functional or practical. There are 4 assessments. These can be combined with National 4 English Assessments.

4 National 4 English Writing and Talking You will:
Write in a range of genres Talk for different purposes There are 2 assessments.

5 Reading and Listening You will:
read a range of material – fiction and non-fiction Listen to a range of material – adverts, interviews, news stories, films … There are 2 assessments.

6 The Added Value Unit You will be able to choose an area of research with guidance from your teacher. You will select information or ideas from at least TWO texts Give a presentation orally or in writing Answer questions.

Internally assessed Evidence provided to the SQA

8 National 5 English Internal Assessment Two Units:
Reading and Listening Writing and Talking These are assessed by your teacher on a pass/fail basis. There are 4 assessments. You must pass them to gain a full award.

9 Course Assessment The Exam
Reading – 2 hours 30 Section One -1 hour One non-fiction text with questions. 30 marks Section Two – 1 hour 30 A critical essay on Drama, Prose, Poetry, Film or TV Drama. 20 marks Questions on a Scottish text from a range selected by the SQA. 20 marks.

10 Course Assessment The Folio
Two pieces of writing: One creative – personal/reflective, short story, dramatic monologue ..15 marks One discursive – argumentative, persuasive, report … 15 marks Total - 30 marks You will work on these in class with support from your teacher but they MUST be your work. They will be marked externally and contribute to your final grade.
