6 National 5 Combined Approach Key skillApproachAssessment Literature : To Kill a Mockingbird and Strange Fruit Learners should be introduced to a range of texts and acquire the knowledge of genre features. Learners should develop skills in note- making and annotating texts. listen Strange Fruit, sung by Billie Holiday: Identify examples of word choice and imagery: Discuss within their groups their impressions: Annotate written copies of the poem and participate in a discussion (critical analysis) of how the poem uses word choice, imagery and structure. Detailed notes are taken which will form the basis of an essay. write a critical essay about the poem’s use of word choice, imagery and structure in handling the themes. Talking and listening also assessed through group discussion.

7 English Added Value Assessments: - National 4 Added Value Unit - National 5 Course Assessment

8 National 4 Added Value Unit Assignment Pupils investigate a topic. Reading: select relevant information from at least two separate sources. Writing: produce a report / essay (800 + words) Talking and listening: present to a large group / respond to questions.

9 National 5 – National 5 – English Course Assessment Question Paper- Reading: – Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation – Critical Reading Critical essay Scottish texts Portfolio- writing

10 National 5 – National 5 – English Portfolio Of Writing 30 marks in total – worth 30% of final mark. Two essays: – Broadly Creative writing – Broadly Discursive writing – Learners must meet all submission deadlines.

11 National 5 – National 5 – English Question Paper - Reading Two sections: Section 1: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (30 marks) I hr Section 2: Critical Reading (40 marks) 1 hr and 30 minutes. – Critical essay (20 marks) – Scottish text (20 marks)

12 Assessment Schedule 2013/14 Aug13 N3 to N5 Timelines / Assessment Schedules. Oct 13 Unit Assessments Dec 13 N5 Prelim and final confirmation of presentation levels. N4 Unit assessments. Feb 13 Final Submission of N5 Portfolio of Writing (worth 30%) of final mark. Unit Assessments. March 13 Completion of all Unit re-assessments @ N3, N4 and N5 (including AVU.) Apr 13 N5 final external exam. N4 pupils begin N5 work.
