The Yamassee lived South of the Appalachian mountains. They hunted deer and turkey. They gathered berries and used resources from nearby forests. They grew corn, beans and squash.

The Early Settlers In the 1500s Spain and France tried to settle in South Carolina, but the settlements failed. Many of the explorers fought with each other. Some of the colonist died from diseases. In 1629 King Charles 1 st of England decided to start a new colony, for English settlers The king granted a strip of land to Sir Robert Heath. The land was in North Carolina and South Carolina. King Charles the 1 st called it Carolina.

Sir Robert Heath started Carolina. The Lord Proprietors founded Charlestown, South Carolina in The English settlements changed life for the Native Americans. They had to share land, and sometimes fought over it.

Life in the Colony Carolina was split into two, North Carolina and South Carolina In South Carolina, people slept on mattresses made of pine branches Settlers covered their dirt floors in their cabins that they lived in with pine needles Settlers grew corn, melons, squash, beans, and rice for food and indigo for dye

Slaves had a high demand from the colonists Slaves were treated very poorly New settlers came from religious groups Some religious groups were the Quakers, Baptist, and other French religious groups The groups came for religious freedom and for their own land where they could practice their laws
