3-2.4 Exploration and Settlement of SC Today we will summarize the development of our state of SC by specific inhabitants. Exploration and settlement of SC Settlement and trade by Barbados and the influence of other immigrant groups. Herndon Productions

2 Settlers People from many different cultures settled in South Carolina during colonial times Each group made a significant contribution to the culture and character of South Carolina.

3 The English were the first to establish a permanent colony in the SC.
Charles Town was a successful colony because the English and the Native American’s learned how to cooperate and help each other. The English were the first to establish a permanent colony in the SC. Look back in your notes on the explorers. Who was the explorer who began the settlement of Charles Town and what is it called today?

4 Take a closer look -1600’s Great Britain was the first European country to take an interest in the Carolina coast They claimed land in North America that would become South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. King Charles gave the entire area to eight Lords Proprietors for a repayment of a debt, and they named it Carolina. King Charles II

5 What is a Proprietor? A proprietor is a business or land owner.
A proprietor has the right to say how their property is used. Sometimes proprietors work as a group to settle one area.

8 Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper
One of the Proprietors was Lord Ashley Cooper. The two rivers in Charleston were named for him. He is known as the most energetic of the Proprietors.

9 In 1669 the Proprietors adopted the Fundamental constitutions
This was a document that set 128 articles or rules for governing Carolina The Constitutions of Carolina established a representative government It guaranteed religious freedom in the colony By doing this they transferred the traditions of democratic government from England to South Carolina.

10 Why would religious freedom be appealing potential colonists?
Settling Carolina When the Lord Proprietor’s decided to explore Carolina and build their colony, they needed people to live there. They offered English settlers land, religious freedom, and voting rights to come to the new land. Why would religious freedom be appealing potential colonists?

11 Barbados Settlers left Great Britain and traveled to Barbados where they picked up more settlers and slaves Barbados is an English Colony in the Caribbean Sea. The Barbadians grew sugar cane on large plantations and made a fortune for themselves and England. They needed more land to expand their plantation system. The plantation system on Barbados became the model for the Carolina settlement.

South Carolina became one of the richest of the thirteen colonies because of their rice and indigo plantations Indigo Plantations

14 Groups who came to settle
The Huguenots were French Protestants who were persecuted or treated badly in Catholic France. They were forced to go to the Catholic church. They came to South Carolina for religious freedom. The Huguenots started the South Carolina Society which started schools and helped the poor.

15 European Jews European Jews were also attracted to the colony because of its religious freedom. They established a synagogue in Charleston They contributed to the city’s economic growth.

16 German and Scotch-Irish people
The German and Scotch-Irish people came to settled the backcountry, or up country as we know it. This area became known as the breadbasket of the colony. These rugged individualists were hardworking farmers. They were sometimes scorned or looked down on by the elite or rich people of the coast.

17 Problems in the back country
The Native American’s in the back country continued to threaten the new settlers The settlers did not feel that the Lords Proprietors were protecting them They asked the King to take over the colony King Charles did take over the colony He sent a Royal Governor to govern or take charge of South Carolina

19 Exit Activity You are a Lords Proprietor trying to encourage new settlers to settle on your new land. In your notebook, create a flyer to attract settlers. Remember to look back in your notes to see how they enticed people to move to their land!
