Colonial Unit Pre-Rev EXAM Review You should study Unit Info pages 6 – 10.

Pennsylvania  To attract settlers to this colony, its Quaker founder sent pamphlets to several European countries and ended up with settlers from Germany, England, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden.

New York  The English wanted to take over this colony because it was a wealthy colony that lay between their Southern colonies and the New England colonies. The English king then gave it to a DUKE who named it after the town he ruled.

Georgia  This colony was the brainchild of James Oglethorpe who convinced the King that those in debtors prison (and other criminals) should work off their debts by working in the fields.

North Carolina  This colony was at a disadvantage because it didn’t have a port and had only small family farms. They had to send their goods through Virginia to use the ports there. They split off from their wealthy neighbor to the south.

Virginia  The settlers of this “first” colony came to find riches of gold – instead they found swamp land and turned to farming tobacco. This cash crop helped the Jamestown colonists create a very successful colony.

Delaware  This colony was made up of Swedish people who petitioned to break off from southern Pennsylvania, but the governor of Pennsylvania still had to approve of all laws.

Maryland  This colony was established as a safe- haven for Catholics who were seeking religious toleration.
