2 Geographical Characteristics and Climate
North Carolina is a damp, sandy, and swampy state. It was warm, which meant it had a long growing season. In the winter, it was bitterly cold. North Carolina also had few harbors, and was not good for farming. It grew more slowly than the south. Daytime highs often average over 90 °F in the summer. North Carolina is in the Northern & Western Hemisphere. Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia border North Carolina. The Appalachian Mountains run through the western part of North Carolina.

3 Reason for Settlement North Carolina was settled because England wanted to help and control southeastern North America.

4 Religious Beliefs North Carolina wanted to worship freely.
They were Anglican and they belonged to the Church of England. King Charles II decided what religions the settlers were. North Carolina had modern-looking churches (going to church was very important to people). FACT

5 Government North Carolina was governed by a proprietor named King Charles II. King Charles II made the laws and rules that settlers were expected to obey. Because of the governor King Charles II, it later became a royal colony.

6 Education North Carolina had few schools.
Wealthy kids were tutored privately or homeschooled. The kids in North Carolina learned reading, writing, dancing, and music skills. If they lived far from schools, they learned skills like sewing, farming, cooking, and hunting.

7 Agriculture/Manufacturing
The crops in North Carolina were indigo, rice, tobacco. A big thing in North Carolina was the abundance of pine trees. The way most people in North Carolina earned money was by selling indigo, tobacco, and rice.

8 Settlements/Homes Rich farmers usually lived in a grand mansion. In the grand mansions, they were often decorated with fine furniture. Rich families had African slaves. People in the “backcountry” life had simple wooden cabins, which were home to the families who lived west of the tidewaters. Most of their belongings, such as chairs, were either made by hand or traded from others.

9 Towns/Cities Raleigh, Roanoke, Ashville, Boone, Cape Hatteras, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, and Wilmington are the main cities and towns of North Carolina.

10 Other Interesting Facts
Very few girls went to school in North Carolina. Many colonists died in Indian fights for independence. North Carolina was successful because of the slavery, rice, tobacco, and indigo. North Carolina became a royal colony.

11 Other Interesting Facts
In 1729, Carolina became two colonies, North Carolina and South Carolina. North Carolina had few harbors and wasn’t good for farming. The Cherokee were a Native American tribe in North Carolina. They were one of the many tribes who refused to leave North Carolina during the 1820s and 1840s. Cape Fear was a part of North Carolina.

12 Important People to Know
Important people to know are King Charles II. King Charles II was the New England king. In 1663, Charles II formed a new colony south of Virginia called Carolina.
