CYOA: The Giver Click here to begin

A Dark Alley You and a group of peers walk down a dark alley, lost. As you keep walking, you hear footsteps coming from behind you and suspect someone is following you and your friends. What do you do? Ignore the stranger and wait for him to leave. Confront him. After all, you are lost and he seems to be Confront him. After all, you are lost and he seems to be congenial. Back to Beginning

Ignore Him You and your friends decide not to do anything about him. After a few minutes, you notice he is not following you anymore. Unfortunately, you reach a dead end and you don’t remember which way you had come from. There is a door on the far side of the dead end, but you do not know where it leads to. Open the door. Stay outside and call for help. Back to Beginning

Confront Him Since you suspect him of following you, you decide to ask him a few questions. What do you ask him? Who are you and why are you following us? Do you know where the nearest bus stop is? Back to Beginning

Open the Door You open the door, hoping it’s the right decision to do so. You find yourself in a desolate wide-open field. Over in the distance, you can barely, but just barely, see a small community in the horizon. It’s going to be a long walk, but if you work hard enough you might be able to find some food and a haven to stay for the night. Walk to the community Turn back Back to Beginning

The Community As you enter the community, the people look at you for a second and then quickly turn away, as if not trying to be rude. Greg brings you guys to a building not far away, where you speak to the House of Elders. They spoke their words in a monotone, but enunciated each word carefully, and always had most fit word for each situation. “So, you children seek a place to stay for the night? Very well then, you will all be temporarily assigned to family units.” A few days later, after you adjust to your new life, you are announced to be the new Receiver-in-Training. Your traits are perfect for the job. Accept Decline Back to Beginning

Accept You gladly accept the assignment, as you know it is very special for someone to be selected as the new Receiver-in-Training. A woman leads you into a freshly refurbished room you had never been inside before. In the room, you meet a man who looks close enough to be a centenarian who you later find out is The Giver. You later find out he is not as old as he looks, and the way he looks is because of his job. You don’t feel as exuberant as you were before, seeing as he’s only half the age you thought he was. The Giver starts transferring these memories into your mind, and they start to get to you. The pain is hard to endure, and eventually you have second thoughts about becoming the next Giver. You feel like the community needs to have love, music, color, feeling. Keep Receiving Memories Escape Back to Beginning

Receive Memories You decide that this is important task and you keep receiving memories, both happy and sad. Your friends are able to leave but you must stay to keep the memories from the people in the community. You experience color, music, love, and all those emotions, but it doesn’t actually exist in the community. Soon enough, you grow old and become the new Giver and transfer the memories to the new Receiver. The End. Back to Beginning

Escape! You decide it’s no use to stay in the community if you can’t have real color, music, art, emotions, and love. You and the Giver make plans - The Giver will stay here and help out the people of the community when the memories come back to them, and you adventure into the outside world. After curfew, you sneak away into the night, but come across a delivery man. He tells you to get back to your house immediately. What do you do? Tell him you’re on an errand for The Giver. Grab his bike and make a run for it! (You were still on your way to getting yours) Back to Beginning

Errand He eyes you suspiciously but believes you. “Never mind, proceed with your errands then, Receiver,” he says. Now you have time to go take Gabriel along with you or continue on the journey by yourself. Take Gabriel Don’t take Gabriel Back to Beginning

Take Gabe You decide that the best life for Gabe would be out of the community and take him along with you. You go get your bicycle and proceed into the woods. After days of biking, you come across something familiar: snow. A few days later you are exhausted. You collapse, and as you get up hear a faint sound. Could it be music? The End. Back to Beginning

Don’t Take Gabe You decide it’s best not to drag Gabe into your business. He might not survive the journey anyway, and if Gabe were to be released then it’s better if he dies comfortably rather than in the wild. You go get your bicycle proceed into the woods. After days of biking, you come across something familiar: snow. A few days later you are exhausted. You collapse, and as you get up hear a faint sound. Could it be music? The End. Back to Beginning

Grab the Bicycle You quickly dash out of the way and grab his bike in the process. He starts yelling and tries to get someone to notice you, but no one is within the vicinity and cannot hear him. You go get your bike and proceed into the woods. After days of biking, you come across something familiar: snow. A few days later you are exhausted. You collapse, and as you get up hear a faint sound. Could it be music? The End. Back to Beginning

Decline You are not released but the elders are very upset with your decision. They will select a new Receiver-in-Training in your place, since you did not accept the assignment. Now you have to decide what assignment you’d like to have. I want to be a Birthmother! I want to go home! Back to Beginning

Birthmother Sorry, Jonas can’t be a birthmother since he is male. But you can be a Nurturer instead. The End Back to Beginning

Go Home You realize your parents must have been worried sick even though you had called them through the service telephone in the community on the first day, telling them you’d be spending the week camping with your friends since it’s summer vacation. The Community lets Gregory lead you back home. The End. Back to Beginning

Game Over Attempting to get out of here, your group of friends split up to try to find an exit. As a result, you all end up getting more lost than you were before and don’t have a way out of the labyrinth of the alleyways. You try to call your parents but there is no service here, and soon enough you are all despondent and give up searching for a way out. Back to Beginning

Question 1 “My name is Gregory and I’m just a normal citizen of this deserted place. I could tell that you kids are lost. I thought it’d be nice to help you and your friends get out of this mess. Just pray your parents don’t chide you if you return home after curfew. Here, I’ll lead you to the bus stop, so follow me,” he answered blithely. Follow HimDon’t follow him Back to Beginning

Question 2 You know you are lost, and in these conditions, safety comes first to you and your fellow classmates. He’s probably just on his way to some place nearby. You ask him “Hello, kind sir, do you know where the nearest bus stop is?” He says he knows where the bus stop is, but you hesitate whether or not to follow him. Follow him. Don’t Follow him. Back to Beginning

Follow Him He opens a door and beckons you to follow him. He tells you this is a shortcut to expedite the trip. Continue Turn Back Back to Beginning

Continue He leads you to a portal and you and your friends find out this really isn’t a shortcut at all. He has brought you to a strange, desolate community cut off from the rest of the world. It seems awfully eerie and you look back hoping there is a way out, but the portal is blocked now. Gregory says, “This is the community. Since you’ll be staying here for awhile, where would you like to head first?” The Community Back to Beginning
