Factories, Machines and Steam…Oh my! -The Industrial Revolution changed the way people worked. -The use of water to power machines brought workers and machines together in a factory, this is called a factory system. -Workers had to work specific hours and keep up with the machines. -James Watt invented the first steam engine in This allowed factories to be built away from the water source and built in cities

Factories Read Pgs Mass Production- Interchangeable parts- What was factory life like during the Industrial Revolution? What is your opinion of child labor? Right or wrong? Why? The North -The North had a large explosion in population. -The main reason is a large increase of immigration through large ports in the North. Increase of population + new technology = A huge growth of factories. What new inventions helped northern industry to grow? Read Pg

The South -The South was an agricultural society. -They did not have as many cities because the population was spread out to set up plantations and large farms Plantations are large estates farmed by many workers. -Slaves are the large working population in the South. -By 1860 there will be over 4 million of slaves working in the South.

Cotton Gin Invented by Eli Whitney in 1763 Made harvesting the cotton from the plant ten times faster. Allowed more plantations to expand and increase the rise of plantations.
