2 James Monroe Became 5 th President “ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS” began… little political strife Monroe Doctrine, 1823 – Told European nations not to interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere Henry Clay developed the “AMERICAN SYSTEM” North and South would work together North would turn out manufactured goods South would turn out agricultural goods

3 Missouri Compromise A debate occurred regarding the statehood of Missouri Slavery was at stake Missouri was not covered by the Northwest Ordinance An extra slave state would mean more power for the South Missouri Compromise Missouri would be admitted as a slave state Maine would be cut from old Massachusetts, thus keeping balance All new western lands north of 36 o N would be free (north of Missouri’s southern border)

5 Growing Nation Population Boom Population exploded between 1780 and 1830 Immigration and slave trade contributed little to boom 90% of boom because of an increase in childbearing Pioneers moved out West

6 America acquired Florida Pinckney’s Treaty (1795) compelled Spain to control Native Americans in Florida Seminoles raided settlers in Georgia Spain, dealing with rebellions in South America, did nothing America accused Spain of breaking Pinckney’s Treaty Andrew Jackson sent in to deal with Seminoles Spain decided Florida is lost and figures they should try to get something for the land they know is already lost ADAMS-ONIS TREATY – Spain ceded Florida to the United States

7 Industrial Revolution Samuel Slater – Brought textiles to the U.S. Noah Webster - Promoted education including Book of Spelling Eli Whitney Advocated interchangeable parts to increase profit and production Invents Cotton Gin Cotton profits skyrocketed making cotton “KING” More slave labor became needed

8 Transportation Erie Canal (1825) built Paid for by New York 365 miles connecting Hudson River to Lake Erie Cumberland Road built First “national road” Connected Maryland to Columbus, Ohio Robert Fulton used James Watt’s steam engine to power boats

9 Social Life Farming became even bigger in the South, while the North began to develop factories for production Second Great Awakening (early 1800’s) Was an Evangelical Movement Began in Kentucky and Tennessee Protestants Believed scripture is final authority Believed that only belief in Jesus yields salvation Believed that doing good deeds could transform your life Baptists experience rapid growth
