VS.4a cash crop: A crop that is grown to sell for money rather than for use by the growers

VS.4a The production of crops, livestock, or poultry. The production of food and goods through farming. The economy of the Virginia colony depended on agriculture as the primary source of wealth. What is agriculture?

Most enslaved African Americans worked tobacco, other crops, and livestock. Enslaved African Americans had no rights. Most white Virginians made their living from the land as small farmers. A few owned large farms (plantations). Many free African Americans owned their own businesses and property but were denied most rights.
