Government Country Comparison of Kenya and South Africa.

Which number represents Kenya?

Kenya Federal System of government How is power distributed? Until 2007 citizens were able to elect the legislature and the leader (president). What government type would this be? The President (head of state) and the Prime Minister (head of government) must share power. Elected for 5 year terms. This was achieved through violence and negotiation. Independence was gained in 1963.

Kenya Voting age of 18 Vote for president and representatives Citizens are only able to criticize their government in limited amounts. Unicameral legislature…The new constitution is working to establish a bicameral legislature in order to prevent future government corruption.

Which number represents South Africa?

South Africa Federal System of government Which authority has the power? Citizens elect a legislature (National Assembly) who then elect a leader. Which government type is this? President=Head of State and Head of Government Bicameral legislature: National Assembly (citizens elect) and National Council of Provinces (appointed by national government) 5 year terms served

South Africa Gained independence in 1910 but it was then controlled by the white minority with Apartheid rules enforced Able to vote at 18 Vote for members within the National Assembly Freedom of speech Freedom of media Citizens are able to criticize the government

Review Kenya and South Africa distribute power in that the central and regional authorities have power. What form of government is this? Who, what leader, helped Kenya become independent in 1963? If citizen participation is moderate to high in Kenya, what type of government is this?

Review If citizens are able to elect a legislature but not the leader as they are in South Africa, what form of government is this? Who is the head of state as well as the head of government in South Africa? Who elects the president in South Africa?

South Sudan And its road to independence finally ending in 2011…

Which number represents South Sudan?

South Sudan What would lead to Sudan having issues within the country? Why might South Sudan want to become independent? How might issues still exist within South Sudan?

South Sudan-Political South Sudan started to fight for independence based upon political, economic, and social issues. Politically, the area of South Sudan was unable to participate within the government of Sudan. Through civil wars South Sudan was able to become independent in 2011 in order to govern themselves. Millions have died due to these civil wars.

South Sudan-Economical Southern Sudan contains a huge resource of oil They want to be in control of what to do with this resource. However, South Sudan is severely underdeveloped and do not have the capital resources to take advantage of this oil.

South Sudan-Social Due to European colonization, Northern Sudan was left with much of the power and trying to force Islam upon the people of Southern Sudan who were majority Christian. Southern Sudanese leaders also thought once Sudan became independent the Northern leaders were not following through on creating a federal system. The final rebellion happened in 1983 and continued into 2005 due to the removal of an autonomy agreement for South Sudan. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement granted South Sudan autonomy and representation in the national government as well as the path for South Sudan to become independent.
