2 SIX TYPES OF GOVERNMENT
1. Unitary – the central government holds nearly all the power 2. Confederation – local government has all the power Example:- Association of Southeast Asian Nations

3. Federal– power is shared between different levels of government Example:-India 4. Autocratic– the ruler has absolute power to do whatever he wishes and enforces whatever laws he chooses Example-North Korea

5. Oligarchy – “government by the few”; a small group takes over the government and makes all the decisions Example-China 6. Democratic– a great deal of power is left in the hands of the people; decisions are made by majority votes Example-India and Japan

5 TWO types of Democracy:
Parliamentary Democracy– the people elect a Parliament (legislature) that makes and carries out the laws for the country The leader is called a Prime Minister and is the head of the government he is chosen by the party that has the majority representatives in Parliament There is usually a “King” or “Emperor” that has no power (a “figurehead”)

6 TWO types of Democracy:
Presidential Democracy– a President is chosen separately from the legislature Legislature passes the laws, the President makes sure they are enforced The President is Head of State and head of the government Difference in a Prime Minister and a President: President is in a separate branch of government whereas the Prime Minister is part of the legislature

8 KENYA Republic - Kenya is a republic with a popularly elected president A republic is similar to a representative democracy, because the people in a republic vote for their representatives President leads the Kenyan African National Union (KANU) One house legislature called the National Assembly All citizens age 18 and over can vote

9 KENYA Freedoms are written in the Constitution, but government is dominated by the president; there have been improvements in citizens’ rights recently Until 1991, Kenya had ONLY ONE political party, by law.

10 SOUTH AFRICA Republic Two house legislature called the National Assembly President elected by National Assembly All citizens age 18 and older can vote Personal freedoms are numerous

11 South Sudan Originally southern Sudan was a separate province named Equatoria When Sudan gained independence in 1956 from the British, South Sudan was told they would be part of the political system The Arab government reneged on the promise and conflict erupted from ; millions died from starvation & drought

12 South Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in January 2005 in which South Sudan was granted a 6 year period to govern themselves At the end of the 6 year period (January 2011) a vote was taken on the final status of South Sudan A vote of 98% in favor of independence from Sudan was attained on July 9, 2011 and South Sudan was established
