7 History of Sudan Area of constant conflict- north against the south
North- Islamic South- Christian Sudan gained its independence in 1956 Capital is in the north of the country South was promised participation in the government process, but promise was not kept. Constant raids by the Islamic north on the Christian south- civil war Led to two long periods of conflict and starvation where an estimated 2.5 million people died.

On going peace talks for many years Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005 After an agreed on 6 year period a vote was taken on whether to become an independent country. 98% of vote went to independence July 9, became an independent country

President- Head of government & Chief of state Legislature and President are elected by popular vote (citizens)

Relies heavily on foreign aid Main occupation- subsistence agriculture Very few resources- BUT they have oil 98% of revenue comes from oil **Since South Sudan is landlocked, they must stay linked with Sudan to be able to transport oil to the ports for shipping.
