Literary Terms A Review

When you do the literary luminary role, you need to find 2 examples of figurative language and/or literary devices. The following slides include things for you to look for.

Figurative Language Imagery Personification Simile Metaphor Symbolism Irony Foreshadowing

Imagery Definition – The language an author uses to create or represent sensory experiences. Note – Imagery refers not only to language that creates pictures in the reader’s mind, but language that creates sounds, smells, tastes, and touch sensations as well.

Personification Definition – Animals, abstractions, and inanimate objects are given human qualities, characteristics, or reactions. Example – Yogi BearYogi Bear

Simile and Metaphor Simile – An analogy showing comparison uses the adverbs like or as. Thus, the comparison is indirect. Example – “O, my luv is like a red, red rose” – Robert Burns. Metaphor – An analogy stated in a way to imply that one thing is another. Example Brain on Drugs VideoBrain on Drugs Video

Symbolism Definition – Use of words, places, characters, or objects that mean something beyond what they mean on a literal level. Examples of Symbolism

Common Literary Devices in Most Novels Tone Mood Motif Allusion

Tone Definition – The attitude of the author toward the reader or the subject matter of a literary work. Short Explanation – Think of this like tone of voice. If your father has an angry tone of voice, then his attitude toward you at that moment is angry.

Mood Definition – The atmosphere of a piece of writing. Distinguishing between tone and mood: Think of mood as the atmosphere of a place, and tone as the attitude of a person. Example – The mood of my room at home is relaxed. However, my mother’s tone toward me when she walked into my room was angry, because I had not cleaned it.

Motif Definition – A reoccurring element or structure such as an incident, a device, or a verbal formula which appears frequently in literature. Motifs do not necessarily have a symbolic meaning. Example – In The Kite Runner blood is a motif: * Blood drips from Hassan’s pant leg. * The lamb was smeared in blood. * The pomegranate juice covers Hassan, like blood. * The bike is red like blood.

Allusion Definition – A casual reference in literature to a person, place, event, or other piece of literature. Examples – The show Family Guy makes allusions in many episodes. Kool Aid Man Family Guy

Irony Full Definition – an incongruity between appearance or expectation and reality. Basic Definition – Often times, something completely opposite of what is expected happens in the plot. Three types: Situational, Verbal, Dramatic

Foreshadowing Definition – The technique of introducing into a narrative material that prepares the reader or audience for future events, actions, or revelations. Examples – Nick talking to Offred and the Commander standing outside Offred’s room. What might these actions foreshadow?
