Types of diabetes and prevalence 29.1 million people have diabetes in the United States That’s 1 out of 11 people. 1 out of 4 people do not know they have diabetes 86 million people have pre-diabetes That’s 1 out of 3 adults who now have pre-diabetes. 9 out of 10 do not know they have pre-diabetes Current treatment for pre-diabetes that works best is lifestyle changes. Prevalence and costs associated with diabetes Without weight loss and moderate exercise 15-30% of people with pre- diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. Cost is $245 billion total medical costs and lost work and wages for people with diagnosed diabetes. Risk of death for adults with diabetes is 50% higher than for adults without diabetes.

Side effects and health risks People who have diabetes are at higher risk of serious health complications Blindness Kidney failure Heart disease Stroke Loss of toes, feet or legs

Type 1 Type 1: body does not make enough insulin Can develop at any age No known way to prevent it More than 18,000 youth diagnosed each year in 2008 and In adults type 1 accounts for approximately 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes
