MS. NGUYEN BIOLOGY Chapter 22: Introduction to Plants Vocabulary Review Game

Truth or Trash 1) In your group, designate a representative. The representative’s job is to meet other representatives in the front of the room with his/her truth or trash sign. 2) How to play: 3) With out using your notes, determine if the word and its definition is the truth or trash. 4) If the answer is Trash, then you must give the correct term to match its definition.

Example: Truth or Trash Ex: Lysosome- “the brain” of the cell. It contains and genetic coding like DNA and is considered the control center of the cell.

1: Truth or Trash 1. Alternation of generation- a life cycle that has two alternating phases- a haploid (N) phase and a diploid (2N) phase.

2: Truth or Trash 2. Bryophyte- a spore-producing plant; the multi- cellular haploid phase of a plant life cycle. Sporophyte

3: Truth or Trash 3. Gametophyte-a gamete-producing plant; the multi- cellular haploid phase of a plant life cycle.

4: Truth or Trash 4. Xylem- a vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of the plant.

5: Truth or Trash 5. Vascular Tissue-a specialized tissue in plants that carries water and nutrients

6: Truth or Trash 6. Seed Coat- a plant embryo and a food supply inside a protective covering. Seed

7: Truth or Trash 7. Angiosperm- a group of seed plants that bear their seeds directly on the scale of cones. Gymnosperm

8: Truth or Trash 8. Ovule- the transfer of pollen from the male reproductive structure to the female reproductive structure. Pollination

9: Truth or Trash 9. Monocot- an angiosperm with one seed leaf in its ovary.

10. Truth or Trash 10. Archegonium- structure in plants that produces egg cells.

11. Truth or Trash 11. Tracheid-vascular plant Tracheophyte

12. Truth or Trash 12. Antheridium- male reproductive structure in some plants that produces sperms.

13. Truth or Trash 13. Green Plant -type of plant made primarily of cells with thick cell walls that support the plant body; includes trees, shrubs, and vines Woody Plant

14. Truth or Trash 14. Dicot-an angiosperm with two seed leaves in its ovary.

15. Truth or Trash 15. Cotyledon- the first leaf or first pair of leaves produced by the embryo of a seed plant.

16. Truth or Trash 16. Dicot- hollow plant cell in xylem with thick cell walls strengthened by lignin. Tracheid

17. Truth or Trash 17. Herbaceous Plant-plants that have smooth and non-woody stem; includes dandelions, zinnias, petunias, and sunflowers.

18. Truth or Trash 18. Seed Coat- the tough covering that surrounds and protects the plant embryo and keeps the content of the seed from drying out.

19. Truth or Trash 19. Ovule- in seed plants, the structure in which the female gametophytes develop.

20. Truth or Trash 20. Phloem-the stricture in a seed plant that contains two haploid sperm nuclei. Pollen Tube

21. Truth or Trash 21. Pollen grain-in seed plants; the structure that contains the entire male gametophyte

22. Truth or Trash 22. Angiosperm- a group of seed plants that bear their seeds within a layer of tissue that protects the seed; also called flowering plants.

23. Truth or Trash 23. Flower-a structure that contains one or more mature ovaries. Fruit

24. Truth or Trash 24. Ovary- a structure in flowering plants that surrounds and protects seeds.

25. Truth or Trash 25. Xylem -a vascular tissue that transports solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis through the plant Phloem

26. Truth or Trash 26. Bryophyte- a group of plants that have specialized reproductive organs but lack vascular tissue.

27. Truth or Trash 27. Monday 11/21/2011- Ch 22 Vocabulary Test
