I. Elements of nationalism Belief that one’s greatest loyalty should be to a people Culture, History, Language, Religion, Territory Nation-state- the unification of a people group into one country Often led to competition to prove national superiority

Desire of a people group to be united into a country Ex: Germans, Italians, minority groups in empires Zionism- the movement to create a Jewish state in their homeland of Palestine

II. Politics Of Nationalism Political spectrum: Conservative, Liberals, and Radicals

Austria-Hungary Hapsburg Austrians controlled a multinational state- many people groups In 1867, split into the Austria-Hungarian Empire Franz-Josef controlled the dual monarchy but each state was independent with different parliaments

Ottoman Empire Multinational European parts of the Ottoman Empire led to conflicts and wars Crimean War- Russia invaded leading to a stalemate, many deaths due to disease Balkan Wars- Many ethnic groups wanted independence, AH got most of Balkans

Germany The German people were divided between Prussia, Austria, and small states Otto Von Bismarck, Prussia’s Chancellor Realpolitik- “politics of reality”, purpose of gov’t is to increase its power believed that it was only through “blood and iron” (military) that he could unite Germany

Bismarck strengthened the military and went to war with Austria- many German states joined him Franco-Prussian War Bismarck got more states to join him in a war against France and then won Prussian king Wilhelm I was named Germany’s first Emperor in 1871

Germany’s Power United Germany had the strongest military and second strongest economy in Europe Germany upset the balance of power- creation of permanent alliances
