News Media in Journalism John Miller

Chapter 20: Vocabulary/Lingo  Post- to put content, such as audio or video, on the Web so that others can have access to it  Blog- a personal online journal  Bloggers- Person who writes a blog  Web Community- a web site on which people can share information about themselves or other people

Lingo Continued  Model T- method used to organize a news story. A summary of the story and its importance is placed at top of the story (Horizontal part of the T). The rest of the informal falls below the summary (Vertical Component of the T).  Podcast- a broadcast to an MP3 player  Vidcast- a video podcast

Lingo Finalized  RSS feed-technology that sends users new content each time a Web site is updated  Golden nugget- a memorable quote that is easy to understand  Logging- writing down what was said in an interview as you listen to a recording of it

News on The Web  million people read news daily via internet  News Stations created online interactive sites to coincide with the changing times  Laptops/ Video Cameras make complete reporting possible anywhere  Good reporters must incorporate all aspects of stories, utilizing as many resources as possible

News on the Web: Surviving the Web 101  Bill Mitchell describes two “dangers of the web”  1. failure to focus hard enough on obtaining the best details  2. incompleteness in writing, hoping that technology will fix errors  Don’t produce error-full work to produce something novel  Consider all perspectives then select best choice  Adjust style and format for the web, short detailed sentences not verbose, excessive sentences

New Ways of Reporting  Internet News consists of all the identical intricate details as paper news  The main difference: internet can and needs updated as frequently as necessary

New Ways of Reporting: Inverted Pyramids  Stories need split into “Coherent Chunks” don’t cause over scrolling articles that will turn readers away  One story= Multiple stories in inverted pyramid online  Most important facts first  Utilizes links frequently

New Ways of Reporting: Model T  75% of internet articles get read  Chunk writing( Same as inverted pyramid)  Utilize subheads, run-in heads and bulleted lists  Utilize graphic and audio effects

Podcasting The News  New Oxford American Online Dictionary made Podcast the word of the year  Typically Podcast come with free subscription  Podcast provide up to date news  Podcasts provide News on musical devices and make news extremely accessible.

Podcasting The News: Elements of Podcast  Obtain appropriate noises that pertain to your subject  Three minutes= maximum time for a typical podcast  Start by dissecting all of the quotes of an interview to turn into podcasts

Podcasting The News: Finding the Nugget  “Golden Nuggets” should not exceed 10 to 15 seconds of a podcast  Find nuggets by logging  Eliminate unnecessary parts of interviews first  Paraphrase quotes to both get best information and to edit timing issues  Pick 3 to 5 “Golden Nuggets” to insert into podcast 

Podcasting The News: Scripting  Once quotes get selected, pick order of quotes pertaining to importance  Use quotes as transitions and always read loudly and lucidly  Time yourself while reading script to gauge time of podcast  Use a “Snappy attention grabbing lead”
