Podcasts in a General and Music Classroom By Zach Nash

What is Podcasting? Podcasting is defined as digital audio or video recording that is usually part of a series that can be downloaded from a website to a media player or computer. Many people recorded their thoughts on issues, or interviews with other people onto podcasts that people can listen to at anytime that they want.

How Can Podcasting Be Used In a Classroom? A podcast can be dedicated to a summary of all the achievements done that year that faculty and parents can view as well as the students. Video podcasts can be posted on the schools website explaining what is to be expected and reached for the school year. Podcasts can also be put up as another reminder of important dates, form turn in dates and fund-raising dates.

How Can Podcasting Be Used In a Music Classroom? In a music classroom it is hard for parents and other teachers to see the hard work that is done in a music classroom every day. This is mostly due to having long periods of time between concerts. A teacher can recorded their class session and make it into a video podcast that parents can see to show students hard work.

How Can Podcasting Be Used In a Music Classroom? (Cont.) Many music appreciation courses in higher education use podcasts to supply music for listening to course requirements. With video podcasting now available, pictures of composers and links to sites with more information can be made readily available to your students.

How Can Podcasting Be Used In a Music Classroom? (Cont.) Podcasts can be used to get other programs involved with the music program. If you are seeing a German song for example you can make a podcast video about how the German teacher thinks about the song. Teachers can recorded some vocal warm-ups that students can then do at home.

How Can Podcasts Be Helpful for Teachers There are many different podcasts out their that teachers can listen to in order to get some new ideas on their field of study. Instead of reading a very lengthy research paper a teacher could just listen to a podcast on the subject on their own time. I listen to many podcasts while driving where before I was basically doing nothing in regards to learning new things on my subject matter.

Cons of Podcasting in a Classroom Requires that students have access to computers. Students must be attentive when trying to learn by listening carefully. Some files may take up a lot of space on a hard drive for some computers. Requires teachers to have some knowledge of computers and uploading podcasts.

Things to consider If you as a teacher are going to decide to integrate podcast technology you must be efficient when doing so. Don’t make podcasts to lengthily, this should vary based on what grade the podcast is meant for. Edit the podcast well, the podcast quality may represent the music program at the school to some people.

Interesting Things To listen to a podcast a IPod is not required you can download almost any podcast to your home computer of laptop. Copyright laws must still be in place and any public domain song can be included in a podcast. If a teacher is not as well informed on technology there are many sources on the internet and technology experts on how to do create your own podcast. Any podcast can be created for free!

How to Create Your Own Podcast 1. Create, record, and edit your audio/audiovisual content. Audacity (www.audacity.sourceforge.net) is a free audio recording and editing program for Mac and Windows. Mac users can use the program Garage Band. 2. Convert the content to.mp3 format for audio and.mp4 for video. 3. Upload your files to your Internet server. This is where the files are physically stored. 4. Create your podcast news feed. Podcast feeds are Really Simple Syndication (RSS) file that describe your podcast, along with information for each show. An RSS file is just a text file that links to your MP3 file.

How To Create Your Own Podcast (Cont.) 5. Validate it using an online RSS validater. Like many computer programs, if the RSS feed is incorrect by one digit or character, it will not work. 6. Publish your podcast news feed. Transfer your podcast RSS file to your Web server as you did for the podcast file itself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- hrBbczS9I0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- hrBbczS9I0
