Earning Credits A “credit” represents one course that a student takes for an entire semester and earns at least a 70 average for the course. Students take 4 courses each semester, so there is an opportunity to earn up to 8 credits in a regular school year.

Registration Process 8 th Graders Visit High School (3/28, 4/4) Parent Information Goes Home Spring Break: Worksheet pre- registration form completion April : Registration for 8 th graders. Verification forms sent home for parent signature, returned, entered Career Development Plans Completed.

EOC Test Standard Three high school courses have a state mandated End of Course (EOC) test which counts as 25% of the total grade. Students must score a level III on the test in order to get credit. This is in addition to passing the teacher standard for the course.

EOC Tests for that will impact students enrolled in these courses English II Math I Biology

North Carolina Graduation Requirements Bladen County students entering 9 th grade in 2012 will need 28 credits for graduation. The minimum required in NC will be 22.

High School Exit Standards Future Ready Course of Study ENGLISH I- BIG CHANGE: 4 credits: English I, II, III, IV EOC for English is now in English II (Grade 10) – NOT English I. 9 th grade students will need 6 Credits, including an English credit to advance to 10 th grade SCIENCE 3 credits: Biology, Physical Science, and one Earth/Environmental Science SOCIAL STUDIES – BIG CHANGE: 4 credits: World History, Civics and Economics, American History I and II. Students may take AP U.S. History (a 1-semester course), but must also take a Social Studies elective if they do so. Physical Education/Health – 1 Credit

MATHEMATICS - BIG CHANGE: 4 credits of Math – Recommended sequence: Math I (Algebra I) Math II (Geometry) Math III(Algebra II), and a course beyond Algebra II. *Some substitutions may apply, depending on a student’s post-high school plans and/or based on outcome of Math I assessment/performance. *Because of Math I skills, all students in 9 th grade should take Common Core Transition to Algebra I prior to taking Algebra 1 or Foundations of Geometry for students who took (and mastered) Algebra I in Grade 8.

9 th Grade Courses English I (Standard or Honors) Math -, Math I (Algebra I) or Math II (Geometry) (Pending 8 th grade EOG/EOC Scores) Science - Earth Science,(Standard or Honors), Biology,OR Physical Science (Standard or Honors) (pending 8 th grade EOG/EOC scores) Social Studies (World History (Standard or Honors)

9 th Grade Courses Health and Physical Education electives from areas of: –World Language –Art/Music –Career and Technical (CTE) Courses –Common Core Transition to Algebra I or Foundations of Geometry (for qualifying students) –JROTC –Students are given a list of suggested electives offered at High School for 9 th graders

Important Notes: Elective choices should be selected based on interest, career plans, and educational goals.

Promotion Requirements To be promoted from: Grade 9 to Grade 10: A student must earn a minimum of 6 credits. One credit must be English. Grade 10 to Grade 11: A student must have earned a minimum of 12 credits. One credit must be English. Grade 11 to Grade 12: A student must have earned a minimum of 20 credits. One credit must be English.

Honors Classes Honors classes are more rigorous, and demanding, requiring additional reading and writing, along with an accelerated pace of learning. Students who enroll in these classes should be self-motivated and willing to commit to extra demands. Students in honors classes receive an extra grade point for determining their GPA.

Extra-Curricular Activities Students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities offered at school. Some of these opportunities include: –Athletics (must meet NC High School Athletic Association eligibility requirements) –Clubs and Organizations

Driver’s Education Driver’s Education is offered to all students each year on campus in after-school sessions. The course is not part of the school curriculum. Students should listen to school announcements for sign-up times throughout the year.

Dates to Remember April 3-6: Students register and bring home verification forms for parent signature. Verification forms returned to the middle school. April Student registrations and forms are sent to the high school. Task: Create a tentative registration plan if your school has not yet done so. If it has, provide C & I with a copy (counselor or administrator).
