Health Skills Handbook – Part 1 Health and Wellness

What Is Health?

What do you think of when you hear the word Health?

Perhaps you think of someone who is in shape or an athlete

Maybe you think of vegetables or a healthy food

You might even think of someone who knows a lot about medicine or anatomy

So … how do we define Health ?

The definition of Health: Health is: a combination of physical, mental, & social well-being

We represent this definition by using the Health Triangle Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Mental & Emotional Physical Social Do you know what the words Physical, Mental & Emotional, and Social mean? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Physical Health: Physical Your Body: Height, weight In shape or not Mental & Emotional Your Body: Height, weight In shape or not Sickness, disease Heart, lungs, organs Social

Mental & Emotional Health: Physical Thoughts & feelings What you know How you think & feel Self-esteem Attitudes Social

Social Health: Social Relationships with: Family Friends Physical Mental & Emotional Relationships with: Family Friends Authority Figures Boyfriends & girlfriends Social

Mental & Emotional Physical Social Being “healthy” means well-being in all three sides of the Health triangle Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Being “healthy” means having a balanced health triangle Mental & Emotional Physical Social A balance of a healthy body, healthy feelings and attitudes, and healthy relationships!

Not Balanced !!! Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Not Balanced, either !!! Physical Mental & Emotional Social

Nope !!! Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Much Better Balanced !! Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Let’s examine the Health Triangle a bit deeper: Physical Mental & Emotional Social

Do all three sides of the triangle touch each other? Physical Mental & Emotional YES !!! A change on one side of the triangle will affect the other two sides. Social

For example, how would a bad physical injury, like a broken leg, affect all three sides of the Health Triangle? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Or, how would something negative Socially affect all three sides of the triangle ? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Better yet, how would something positive Mentally and Emotionally affect all three sides of the Health Triangle? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

In other words, you have a “Mind-Body Connection” Your emotions affect your physical health and overall health Your overall health affects your emotions

Your health triangle changes from day to day. Consider this: Your health triangle changes from day to day. Physical Mental & Emotional Social

One day, your triangle may be balanced and strong Consider this: One day, your triangle may be balanced and strong Physical Mental & Emotional Social

The next day, it might be weak on one or more sides Consider this: The next day, it might be weak on one or more sides Mental & Emotional Physical Social

Even though your health changes from day to day, you should try daily to have a strong, balanced Health Triangle

We have a word for trying to be as healthy as you can be … We use the term “wellness”

A state of well-being or balanced health over a long period of time Balancing and improving your health over weeks or months Should be a part of your daily routine Wellness:

Each day, try to do something positive for each side of your Health Triangle!

During this Health class, we will explore ways to keep our Health Triangles strong and balanced!

We will examine things which may harm or damage your health and well-being…

We will also examine things which may improve and protect your health and well-being…
