2 Objectives Today we are going to learn about … –The relationship between health and wellness. –Keeping your physical, mental/emotional, and social health in balance. –Create goals based on your personal health

3 Quick Write Think about what the word “health” means to you. –Make a list of all the things you associate with being healthy. –Share your list with the class. –How similar was your list compared to those created by your classmates?

4 HEALTH PUZZLE Each student in the class will receive a “puzzle piece” On the piece please write your name on the backside (marked by the number). Decorate the puzzle piece with pictures and words that come to mind when you think of “health”

5 What is health? Health is a combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. –Physical health = the condition of your body. –Mental and emotional health = your thoughts and feelings. –Social health = the way you relate to other people.

6 Maintaining Your Health Balance Being healthy means keeping your health triangle in balance. Here are some ways to work on all three sides of your health triangle: Physical: Get regular physical activity, eat nutritious foods, and get enough rest. Mental/emotional: Take time to study, to think, and to express your feelings in healthy ways. Social: Spend time with both family and friends.

7 continued … Remember! Changes you make to one side of your health triangle will also affect the other two sides. –For example, if you spend more time playing sports, your physical health will improve. –This will also help you feel better about yourself, improving your mental health.

8 Ways to Improve Your Physical Health Playing sports like soccer, football, Frisbee, badminton, baseball, etc. Lifting weights Going for a jog or a bike ride Hiking Eating healthy foods

9 Wellness Wellness is a state of balanced health. –To maintain wellness, try to protect and improve your health.

10 Personal Health Activity Take this personal health inventory to find out if you have a clear and accurate view of your own health. Think about the following statements and respond with “yes” or “no”.

11 Physical Health 1.)I get at least eight hours of sleep each night.

12 2.)I eat a well balanced diet, including a healthful breakfast each day.

13 3.) I practice good hygiene.

14 4.)I do at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day.

15 5.)I avoid using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs

16 6.)I see a doctor and dentist for regular checkups

17 Mental/Emotional Health 1.)I feel good about who I am.

18 2.)I am confident in my abilities.

19 3.) I generally keep a positive attitude.

20 4.) I ask for help when I need it.

21 5.)I am able to handle stress in a healthy way.

22 6.)I am constantly trying to improve myself.

23 Social Health 1.)I relate well to family, friends, and classmates.

24 2.)I try to work out any differences I have with others in a healthy way.

25 3.) I express my feelings in positive ways.

26 4.) I treat others with respect.

27 5.)I can say no to risky behaviors (peer pressure).

28 6.)I communicate well with others.

29 Conclusion Give yourself 1 point for each yes. A score of 5-6 in each area reflects good health. If you score 0-2 in any area, try to improve that part of your health triangle.
