Welcome to 8th Grade Science! with Mrs. Katrina Alegado Room C2 Twin Falls Middle School

Mrs. Katrina Alegado n Bachelor of Science from Oregon State University in General Science (2001) n Master of Arts in Teaching from Willamette University (2002) n Professional Certification (2010) n I enjoy hiking, biking, camping, reading, music, and art.

Required Classroom Materials n Pencil (with extras) n Notebook (Steno notebook for science) n notebook paper n student planner (Raven Book) n ruler, calculator, colored pencils, glue sticks

Year-Long Curriculum n Nature of Science (Scientific Method, Lab Write-Up, Data Processing) n Density (Understanding and Application) n Chemistry n Cycles in Earth Systems (weather, water, oceans, earthquakes, volcanoes) n Genetics, Adaptations, and Evolution

Grading n No late work accepted! n Grades will be calculated through a point system and this will accumulate throughout the trimester. Grades will be updated on Skyward frequently. n There will be a cumulative test at the end of each unit. n Tests 50%Notebook 5% n Labs 20%Homework 5% n Daily Work 15%Class Participation 5%

Grading Scale n % = A n 80-89% = B n 70-79% = C n 60-69% = D n Below 60% = F

Assessments n n Grades need to reflect what a student knows and can do. n n Therefore, summative and formative assessments will be used in this class. n n Dates for summative assessments will be announced well in advance (tests, projects, labs, etc.), and will be worth more points. n n Formative assessments (more frequent checks of student progress) will be given a few times a week. These will include worksheets, labs, participation, quizzes, assignment checks, citizenship, and other forms of assessment and will all count equally in determining the final grade.
