Mrs. Metts’ 2 nd Grade Class S.O.P. Night (aka Curriculum Night)

Attendance/Tardy  8:00 students can come onto campus and can enter into our classroom to start their morning work.  If your child comes in the room after 8:25, he/she will be counted tardy.  Absent: your child must have a note written (separate from agenda). These notes get turned into the office (required by law). Please have your child’s name, my name & sign the note.  Pre-arranged absence: Must be turned in at least 5 days in advance.

Daily Schedule: Morning Work & AR Reading: Ability Groups Language Arts and Grammar Daily 5 Lunch Recess Science/ Social Studies Specials Math Writing Dismissal & DEAR

Math  This past Spring we adopted the Math Series – PearsonRealize.  As soon as we receive the information and passwords for you to use to log your child into Pearson, I will get it to you.  i-Ready is a math computer program. The student will be required to spend 30 minutes per week on i-Ready at home (homework) and 30 minutes per week at school.

Math Grading Tests = 45% (Topic tests if at the end of the topic) Assignments = 35% (At the end of weeks without completing a full unit) Math Fluency = 20% (Biweekly)

Language Arts Grading Writing = 30% (per the blueprints) Grammar = 30% (1 grade per week) Spelling = 20% (weekly 15 words and 1 dictation sentence for a total of 20 pts.) Vocabulary Strategy = 20% (biweekly)

Reading  Reading series: McGraw-Hill “Wonders”  Fri. – Test: Cold read to test skills, not comprehension of the week’s stories. Istation is a computer program for reading. The student will be required to spend at least 30 minutes per week at home (part of homework) and 30 minutes per week at school.

Reading Grades Vocabulary = 30% (weekly test) Oral Reading Fluency = 25% (biweekly) Comprehension= 45% (weekly tests from reading series: a cold read of the weekly skills, not a comprehension test of the weekly stories.)

Accelerator Reader (AR)  Students take quizzes on books they have read.  Chapter books read once  Picture books read three times  Nonfiction 3 times, 1 level easier  Must have an 80% average to get a check.  Students must me their AR Goal set by the teacher and student. Each child has a different AR goal.

AR Continued  Points give students tags and prizes  Students are required to read and take 3 AR tests per week for the first nine weeks, 4 AR tests per week for the second nine weeks, 5 AR tests per week for the third nine weeks, and 6 AR tests per week for the fourth nine weeks.

Personalized Learning Personalized Learning will be implemented in Math this year. The students will be unpacking standards and working on Choice Boards. If the student mastery a standard they will be able to move to the next standard being taught The students will be taking a pre and post test for each standard.

The second 9 weeks the students will be taking pre and post test for Language Arts and some reading Standards.

Personalized Learning Continued Unpacking the Standards is where the student and teacher breaks apart the standard in order for the children will understand it. Flipped Classroom – I plan to flip my classroom in Math through Edmodo. Flipping the classroom is where the teacher has the students to preview a video regarding the next days lesson.

Edmodo Edmodo is an educational program for parents, students, and teacher. The teacher will be posting notes, assignments, quizzes, polls, and videos through Edmodo. Edmodo is a safe program.

Homework & Week at a Glance  Homework packets are sent home on Mondays and are due on Fridays from August to June. Math homework is sent home daily and due the next morning.  Read every night & record on Reading Log  Spelling practice: see website for ideas! Spelling City website is AWESOME!  Week at a Glance come home on Mondays…please post on your fridge!  Istation – 30 minutes per week.  iReady – 30 minutes per week.

Agendas  Please check your child’s agenda every day.  Agendas are to be signed and returned to school every day.  You may write or attach a note in your child’s agenda. **Be sure to tell him/her to tell me that there is a note**

Code of Cooperation (Rules)  Work Hard.  Be the Best You Can Be.  Be Prepared.  No teasing or bullying.  Don’t interrupt when someone else is talking.  Be Polite.  Keep hands and feet to yourself.

Lunch  11:06-11:36  Lunch money:  In envelope with 1 st & last name  Lunch number  Amount of money (let kids count!)  Pay online:  You may come to eat with YOUR child! (not their friends, though…)

Enrichment  MTTF 12:20-1:05  Wed 11:45-12:20  Enrichment is on an 9 day rotation  Media, PE, Music, PE, Media, PE, Technology, PE  Make sure they have appropriate shoes for PE

Yellow Tickets –Given out by Lost Lake Staff –Reward – popsicle or Drawing Blue Lion Loot-Specials –Given only by a special area teacher –Earn loot as a class –Follow the rules for special areas –Reward once a semester –Establish own guidelines for Lion Loot day Reward System

Field Trips We will have 1 or 2 field trips this year. To be a chaperone, you MUST complete a volunteer form at least a month in advance. A background check is required to attend a field trip with any student who attends a Lake County School.

Mandatory Uniforms Tops: Knit polo style collared shirts in hunter green, navy, white, pink, or light blue must be worn Mon.-Thurs.. Fridays only-- Jeans on Friday must be fully intact appropriately without fashionable rips or tears. Jeans may be worn with a Lost Lake T-shirt.

Uniforms Continued Footwear: Tennis shoes or shoes with an enclosed heel are preferred. Sandals must have a heel strap.

BIRTHDAYS Birthdays We will no longer have birthday treats in the cafeteria per administration. Birthday treats may be sent in in the morning with your child. They may NOT be homemade. It needs to be something simple. Cookies or small cupcakes are recommended. PEANUT-FREE! They will be served to the students at recess. Please do not send in birthday party invitations for your child to pass out as per the student handbook.
