MELISSA MILLER CHEMISTRY OPEN HOUSE

MELISSA MILLER

CHEMISTRY Chemistry is very much a think and apply kind of course. Many times it’s the first time students have encountered this level of rigor. Algebra 1 is a prerequisite for the course and is a better indicator of success in chemistry than biology. Sometimes students feel a bit overwhelmed in chemistry. Math and science are incorporated in ways that the students may not be used to. The following are a few tips to help your student:

HELPFUL HINTS 1. Provide the student with a distraction free place to study on a regular basis. Encourage them to study daily. Write down any questions or problems and get the answer the next day from the teacher. Remember, the more they practice, the easier it gets, and homework is practice. Chemistry is a cumulative subject, which builds on the understanding of each day’s lesson. Don’t let problems accumulate. 2. Encourage students to add to their class notes. Generally there are examples given in class that can help the student in solving homework problems and studying for quizzes. 3. Students have plenty of resources to aid them in their mastery of the subject. There are other students, notes, ebook, tutoring sites, and the teacher. Again, encourage the student to get help as soon as possible. 4. Positive support and encouragement of the student along with a faith in their ability to understand will provide the greatest long-range benefit.
