A & E's “Top 10” People of the Past Millennium Physicists are listed in red!! 1. Johann Gutenberg 2. Isaac Newton 3. Martin Luther 4. Charles Darwin 5. William Shakespeare 6. Christopher Columbus 7. Karl Marx 8. Albert Einstein 9. Nicolaus Copernicus 10. Galileo Galilei (in Western Culture) Culture Quiz!! Who were these people? Why are they famous?

Class Web Page! http://www.phys.ttu.edu/~cmyles/Phys1408/1408.html NOTE!! THIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION!! There, you will find: 1. Posted (Word): Syllabus, Help Resources, links to old exams (with solutions), links to old quizzes (with solutions). 2. Posted (Power Point): Lectures 3. A link to the on-line homework page, WebAssign. 4. Important Class Announcements & Calendar Items! 5. Links to help resources web pages 6. Other important items relating to this class. PLEASE!! Get into the habit of checking this often!

Announcement Page! My Web Page Linked from the class Web Page is: The Announcement Page: http://www.phys.ttu.edu/~cmyles/Phys1408/announce.html This contains class announcements & major calendar items. Please check it often! You might also check out My Web page at: http://www.phys.ttu.edu/~cmyles/

Physics 1408 Email Distribution List! –It is VERY important that you have an email address & that I have it!!! –I will use the email distribution list to make important class announcements!!! –It is VERY important that you check your email DAILY!!! (PLEASE tell me if you change email address!)

Math Co- & Pre-Requisites Math is the Language of Physics!! But, this is NOT a math course!! I simply do not have time to teach math to you! I must assume that you know it! Primary difficulties with the course are often math-related!! Pre-Requisite: Math 1451: Calculus I –Or an equivalent course somewhere else! Assumed Pre-Requisites: –Math 1320 & 1321: Algebra & Trigonometry –Or: Math 1550: Pre-Calculus, Or equivalent courses elsewhere. Take advantage of the: Math Review in Appendix B!

Physics 1408 Laboratory This no-credit lab is a required co-requisite! IF you drop the lecture you MUST drop the lab also! ATTENTION! LAB SCHEDULE All labs begin Wednesday, July 10!! NOTE: COME to lab prepared to start, including already having your lab manual!!!

Physics 1408 Recitation This no-credit recitation is a REQUIRED co-requisite! IF you drop the lecture you MUST drop the recitation also! ATTENTION! RECITATION SCHEDULE All recitations begin Wednesday, July 10!!

Where to Go for Help?? See the syllabus, which covers this! –See Me!!! Room 18. During office hours or not (I’m usually not rigid about these). Or call me on the phone. Or email me! I respond to email!!! –See your Lab TA!!! There will be office hours for this person. –Get a tutor!!! The Physics Department Office (Room 101) has an approved list.

–Your Fellow Students!!! A very effective strategy can be to work on homework & to study for quizzes & exams together in a group. This is how professionals work in the “real world”. –The Internet!!! There are HUGE numbers of Physics Help Web sites! Using Google.com & typing in “Physics Help” gives about 54,700,000 hits!!!! I encourage you to try out some. The last page of the syllabus lists some Physics Help Web pages. –Class Web Page! Where to Go for Help??

Bottom Line on Help IF YOU NEED HELP, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!! If you need help & don’t use these resources, only YOU are to blame!

To Succeed in this Course See document: “How to succeed in Physics by Really Trying”. READ the book, which cost you many $$$! –It’s most effective to read the material BEFORE I lecture over it. WORK the assigned homework problems!! –Before looking at the solutions. Copying the solutions will NOT teach you physics. WORK extra problems!

COME TO CLASS!! There is a correlation between attendance & grade! Also, skipping means that you are WASTING the tuition & fees that you (or your parents) paid! With tuition & fees for a full- time student, each class meeting costs about $39. Each time you skip, you are throwing away about $39!! After a while this adds up! My lectures may not be entertaining or brilliant, but I do expose you to the material! ATTENDANCE!!! THE WEEKEND DOESN’T BEGIN ON THURSDAY (or end on Monday)!!!! FRIDAY IS A REGULAR CLASS DAY (as is Monday)!!! To Succeed in this Course

On-Line Homework Posted on the Commercial Website WebAssign –On-line homework will be assigned & graded at the WebAssign site. –Doing homework is the most effective means of learning physics, which is impossible without working problems! –Once you are registered at WebAssign, you’ll be able to download assignments. Assignments are posted as we start a chapter & are due by 11:30pm about 5 days later. –You’ll be able to get answers after the due date.

WebAssign –To access WebAssign, login at https://www.webassign.net/login.htm. Instructions are in the Student Access Kit. –If you don’t have the Student Access Kit which comes with a new book, you can purchase one on the WebAssign site. Please do this ASAP! –NOTE: This site is not at TTU & you should give yourself plenty of time for submitting answers– sometimes the network can be slow or down.
