The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Francesco Di Corpo An Integrated Navigation/Communication System Meeting the Requirements of the e-112 European Directive for in car Emergency Call

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Outline Introducing Tema.mobility Consortium Pan-European vs Private eCall The Tema.mobility Solution: Architecture Description Advantages and Test Results

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Introducing Tema.mobility o Contributors to this work: Graziella Spinelli – Tema.mobility Stefano Bozzo – Magneti Marelli Fabrizio Dominici, Paolo Mulassano - ISMB = + o Magneti Marelli and Telecom Italia founded at the end of 2007 the Tema.mobility consortium with the specific mandate of exploiting all the possible benefits from the integration of advanced COM and NAV technologies o Activities related to satellite navigation are carried out with the support of a well-know R&D center

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Vehicle Tracking Suite Cargo SuiteUrban Mobility Suite Solution for vehicle tracking and the main parameters. It mainly address: Insurances society: enabling improved insurance services (e.g. PAYD) Rental cars: fleet management solutions Special Fleet: solutions for fleet management for public services (e.g. Taxi) and public safety (e.g. ambulances) Society for public activities (e.g. plumbers): solution for workforce management Solution dedicated to the improvement of mobility in urban areas Traffic monitoring and optimization Monitoring and control to limited areas Optimization of the parking management.... Solutions for management, optimization and monitoring of fleets dedicated to goods transportation Mission Planning and management Route optimization and service improvement check of the operational vehicle parameter and of the Driver support.... Automotive Suite B2B solutions dedicated to car makers for the management of services to the customers (e.g. SOS Emergency, Intelligent maintenance Info Portal), using an infobrokering platform able to integrate contents and services coming from different providers. Provides the management of the front-end process (e.g. CRM, Billing, Reporting) eMa Mobility Areas of Competence TeMa Mobility Areas of Competence

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March The eCall Paradigm o eCall is the term for a pan-European system for emergency calls in vehicles using the emergency telephone number 112 in case of accident o the introduction of this system with full European coverage has been foreseen in 2010 o emergency Call (eCall) in the context of road traffic can be described as a system to provide notification to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP), by means of wireless communications, that a vehicle has crashed and to provide coordinates with a defined minimum set of data 112 voice Call 1 MSD 2 The single European emergency number 112 was introduced to enable citizens to call the emergency services by using one and the same number anywhere in the European Union [Council Decision of July 29, 1991 (91/396/EEC) and Universal Service Directive of March 7, 2002 (Directive 2002/22/EC)]

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Overview of System Architecture 8 GPS Network Telco Service Exposure VT&T Platform SMS [Minimum Set of Data] SMS [MSD] Client Web To access the MSD messages PSAP MSD Analysis GSM Voice Call Emergency event (Trigger): - Manual (emergency button) - Automatic (CAN bus/Shock Sensor) TBOX

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March On Board Unit – OBU: Marellis T-BOX GPS GSM Modem Audio CAN Bus

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March T-Box On Board Unit Telematic-Box key features o Quad-band GPRS MODEM o GPS high sensitivity indoor o Rechargeable Backup battery o XYZ-Axis Acceleration Sensor with g-Select o CAN network o Digital I/O o Power supply: V o MicroC/OS II Operating system o Serial port RS232 o ad-hoc firmware for eCall management Voice call management PDU (8 bit) message SMS-C o Test done in cooperation with Björn Steiger Stiftung Service Institute managing several safety answering points in Germany

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Minimum Set of Data Emergency Position

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Key Features: o Usage of the Telco Service Exposure (TSE) platform for SMS reception o Management of the Minimum Set of Data (MSD) compliant to the eCall standard o Vehicle information display o Vehicle position and data visualized on several cartographic tools and systems

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Advantages of Proposed Solution o No central eCall PSAP necessary (but possible) o Fast solution introduction, no specific infrastructures are needed o Open and neutral technology (SMS, USSD, WLAN etc.) o Car manufactures can select which protocol and encryption of data they prefer o High reliability (currently proved on the field and massive tests) o Redundancy through multi-access possibilities for the PSAPs o Possibility to connect the system to other backend applications o Low cost

The Fully Networked Car Geneva, 4-5 March Test & Results o Tests of the developed prototype have been conducted in Turin by Tema.mobility and ISMB with the support of Telecom Italia and Magneti Marelli o Further tests with T-BOX have been done in the framework of a cooperation with the Björn Steiger Stiftung (BSS) o BSS organized massive tests for the private eCall using an infrastructure that relies on a PSAP connected to two SMS-C gateways: 23 European Country crossed; More than SMS triggered during 9 months tests; Short delivery time for MSD: 63% t<8s, 11% 8s<t<15s … Private eCall is a reliable and flexible solution o Important to have an eCall solution applicable for all European PSAPs independent on the technological standard and financial situation First test campaign
