It is also where the main shops and offices are. In the centre, people can reach them from all directions. Rows of small cheap terraced houses were built close to the factories for the workers. As the population grew, new houses were built at the edges of the settlement where land was cheaper. 19 th century housing The first factories were built along canals, rivers or railways, so that goods could be moved easily. Today new industries are usually set up close to major roads towards the edge of town.
