Getting Involved In The S. G. A. Tyrone M. Smiley December 3, 2007 Intro to Public Relations

Background Est. in 1946 being a student led organization Comprised of four branches of government: Executive- President, Vice President of Student Senate, Vice President of Organizational Affairs, Vice President of Student Activities & Director of Publicity Legislative- Student Senate Judicial- Chief Justice & Associate Justices Activities- Assigned Committees for Student Activities

Problems & Goals Attendance at sponsored events Publicity of events in an adequate amount of time. Present surveys to the student body Develop more creative and exciting activities Creative a better publication system

Objective To protect and defend the rights and responsibilities of the University to the students and the students to the University. To represent and provide a sound democratic student government, to promote student interests in the decision-making processes of Jacksonville State University, and to foster a spirit of unity among students. To present views and strive towards a better understanding between administration, faculty, and students. To fulfill, to the best of our ability, the wants and needs of the entire student body. To develop, coordinate, and execute activities and services for the benefit of the students. To facilitate due process in an attempt to advance the academic and social standards of the University and awareness of the responsibilities inherent with membership in the University community and provide input for judicial procedures. To provide the students with the means to vote for their representative officials through general elections. To cultivate and maintain leadership among the students.

Audience The overall plan and goal is to reach all members of the Jacksonville State University student body who reside on campus and those that commute back and forth to campus. I would also like to attract the general public who live within a certain mileage range to attend different functions on campus.

Strategies & Tactics Homecoming In previous years, the Homecoming activities have not attracted the entire student body enough to participate in them. This is in part due to the lack of time, effort and also finances. To better encourage the students to participate in the activities, ideas should be formed and activities should be planned and arranged that are centered around the student bodies request. More money needs to allocated to the Homecoming committee so that they can have the necessary funding needed to purchase various equipment and items. The theme and events for various days should be selected by a student led forum instead of the university officials, which has been done in previous years.

Strategies & Tactics Spring Concert The Spring Concert is the final and last major event that is sponsored by the Student Government Association. The concert should be a student led decision on what type of musical act and entertainment the university should try to lore to the school. Different categories & genres should be suggested for this to be effective and for everyone to be able to voice their concerns and opinions. In previous years, the university officials and community leaders around the city have been the deciding factor on who to bring to the university but for more students to attend and be satisfied with the entertainment, the student body should be the ones to vote upon the topic.

Strategies & Tactics Publications Publicity is something that needs to be updated and well- maintained here at Jacksonville State University. Through the legislative branch of government, there is a publicity committee that is assisted by the Director of Publicity from the executive branch. A new and innovative way needs to be devised to attract more and more students to different events. Bulletin Boards, car window tags, electronic billboards and more are all suggestions that can be put into place to inform students about the activities going on around the university.
