Page 273 Sources of tension in Europe 1.Militarism- building up of military power to prepare for war. 2.Imperialism- strong countries seeking to control weaker countries. 3.Nationalism- love of nation and desire to have one’s nation free from control of others. 4.Alliances- agreement among nations to defend one another.

Page 275 US enters the war. On May 7, 1915 Germany sank a British passenger ship the Lusitania. Wilson warns Germany not to attack non-military ships. In January 1917, the Germans sent a secret message (Zimmerman telegram) asking Mexico to attack the US if the US attacked Germany. Germany would then help Mexico get back land (Southwest) from the US.

In March 1917,three American trade ships are sunk. Page 275 US enters the war. February 1917, Germany orders submarines to attack any ship suspected of carrying weapons to the Allied Powers. Page 279 The War Ends On November 11, 1918, the Central Powers surrendered. November 11 is Veteran’s Day. This war had been so devastating and costly it was called “The War to End All Wars,” because no one could imagine it happening again.

Page 280 US and the Peace Process President Wilson suggested an international organization to prevent wars called the League of Nations. The Treaty of Versailles ended WWI. It required Germany to pay reparations (fines to rebuild Europe) and Germany could not rebuild its army. *The US never signed the treaty because they disagreed on the harsh treatment of Germany and feared the League of nations might put the U.S in other wars.
