Spanish-American War

Yellow Journalism Deceitful news articles/newspapers that exploit and sensationalize the “truth” in an effort to sell newspapers and make money.

Remember The Maine American battleship Maine was in Havana, Cuba harbor to “protect American interests” It exploded; killed 254 men

Newspaper Tycoons American press accused the Spanish, even publishing pictures that blame them William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, the biggest newspaper giants in the world, competed to sell more newspapers than each other by making up stories

Lies Begin Brewing Before the Maine exploded, the newspapers turned a minor revolt in Cuba between Cubans and Spanish into a major war Hearst told photographer, who when arriving in Cuba said, “There is no war”, that “You furnish the pictures, I’ll furnish the war.”

Lies Bring War People believed whatever was written in papers After weeks of being bombarded with this, the American public, all the way to Congress, all cried out, “Remember the Maine!” We went to war!

“A Splendid Little War” Congress set aside $50 million to prepare for war Army not ready

Back to the Pacific Navy ready for war! Went to attack Spanish colonies in the Philippine Islands Destroyed Spanish fleet Had 9 American casualties: a soldier who is either killed, captured, wounded, or missing. Gained the Philippines (gave back to the people eventually)!

Rough Riders: Battle of San Juan Hill Teddy Roosevelt led the way in the Caribbean Fought hard in Cuba; there were many casualties from disease, and time was very hard for them Determined to win, they charged up San Juan Hill, and demanded Spanish surrender

A Big Turkey Shoot The governor of Cuba responded by attacking the American ships in the harbor The Spanish fleet was then destroyed After they won in Cuba, they went to Puerto Rico and easily won there Four months of fighting, 460 soldiers lost in the battle In the end, USA won Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba is free!

President Teddy Roosevelt New York Governor, then Vice President, then president when Pres. McKinley was assassinated. Foreign policy was “Speak softly and carry a big stick”.
