2. Spanish American War
By 1890, the Cuban people were revolting against Spanish rule. The US watched the events in Cuba very closely. On the night of February 15th 1898 the USS Maine mysteriously exploded in Havana harbor.

3. April 25th the US declares war on Spain
April 25th the US declares war on Spain. The Army and Navy are sent to the Philippine Islands and Cuba. May 1st: the US destroys a Spanish fleet in the Battle of Manila Bay and invades the Philippines.

4. July 1st: the US won a significant victory in Cuba at the Battle of San Juan Hill, two days later the US Navy destroys the Spanish Fleet off Cuba.

5. The war officially ended on December 10th with the Treaty of Paris of Spain surrendered the Philippine Islands, Guam and Puerto Rico and Cuba is granted independence.
