1. Competitors were William Randolph Hearst’s NY Journal and Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World 2. Exaggerate accounts of the war 3. Leads to American sympathy for the rebels, and a greater cry for American intervention 4. “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war”

1. (Feb. 1898): US battleship Maine exploded in Havana harbor killing 260 Americans 2. Yellow press blamed explosion on Spanish (till this day no one actually knows what happened) Funeral for Maine victims in Havana

Platt Amendment (aka “we were just kidding about that Teller Amendment thing” Prohibited Cuba from making treaties with foreign powers Permitted US to intervene in Cuban affairs to protect liberty and maintain order Allowed US to maintain military base in Guantanamo Bay
