Mrs. Fish ’ s Thoughts … Art is a way to express personal understanding and interpretation of the world Everyone is creative in his or her own way Sketchbooks are a place to work through the artistic decision-making process and to practice foundational skills To produce high quality work one must fully grasp the realistic qualities of the world in order to accurately interpret those qualities in non- objective or abstract form

This is the year of realism. What is realism? Is realism more than that? In what ways can we, as artists extend the meaning of “ real ” ?

Classroom Expectations Respect Others Be nice people. If you can ’ t say something nice, don ’ t say anything. Those in positions of authority should be obeyed. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Follow Directions Be where you should be when you should be there. Do what you should when you should do it.

Work Quietly Talk quietly with those at your table only when permitted to do so. Brains work faster when noisy distractions are gone. MP3 players are not permitted on school grounds Use Materials and Equipment Properly Pay attention, you will find out what this means If you ’ re still not sure, just ask.

Clean up Your Area You will stay in the classroom until the teacher dismisses you (not the bell), at which time the art studio is cleaned completely and correctly. When using the sinks, water should remain in the basin. All School Guidelines and rules apply in this classroom. See your handbook. If you ’ re not sure, the answer is probably, “ No ”.

Use only “ school appropriate ” themes in your artwork! Prohibited Topics (No … ) Drinking (alcoholic beverages) Smoking (tobacco or otherwise) Doing Drugs (this includes symbols, text, and paraphernalia directly or indirectly related to illegal substances and their abuse) Having Sex (which includes topics and visual anatomy associated with sexuality) Killing People (including injuring, maiming, decapitating, other forms indicative of physical harm, and/or devices which may inflict said harm)

Appropriate Topics Anything not listed above Tastefully, carefully selected visual statements of a personal position on a cultural topic Mrs. Fish is the final authority on any “ gray ” area

Repetition of a theme Is not allowed during your Art 3 year Rationale You are here to learn as much as possible Variety is a principle of art While you may learn from repeating a theme (this does often happen in a professional artist ’ s body of work), this is not the level at which your skills will benefit because You are still developing and learning technical “ how-to ” skills You are still growing an understanding of your own interpretation of the world You are better able to present yourself with challenges Mrs. Fish will become bored

YOU NEED TO … Bring to class Sketchbook Pencil Set Reference materials as required Pay your art fee $55.00 Cash or check made out to LHS Failure to pay on time will result in the forfeiture of supply use. Assigned reports and book work will take the place of studio work with materials! THIS MUST BE PAID by Fri, Sept. 11

How to Get an “ A ” Posted on the board and looks like this …

Major Assignments Progress 20 points may be earned by meeting deadlines given during project work random and unannounced May be one or more opportunities depending upon project Completion 100 points may be earned by meeting and exceeding project requirements (see “ How to get an ‘ A ’” and rubric for each project)

Minor Assignments Outside of Class work points as announced Sketchbook Assignments 20 points each Three topics will be given at the start of the month TWO are due at any point during the month May be reworked and turned in for additional points BEFORE the last school day of the month in which they are due — no make-up or red-do after the month is over

Extra Credit Because I expect you to complete all assignments with success, extra credit is rare One extra credit assignment will be provided per semester (two in a year) Additional outside of class work may also be given extra credit points as announced Take advantage of the points when they ’ re offered!

Due Dates As assigned are firm Extensions Granted with excused absences Sketchbook Assignments Three exclusions allowed for the year You may turn in one of the “ coupons ” instead of a sketchbook assignment (3 per student, per year) Major Projects — BEFORE DUE DATE! Ready for your first assignment?? At the top of a page, list three little-known facts about yourself In the middle of the page, brainstorm ways to visually represent these three facts At the bottom of the page, create a value study of (what could be) an artwork representing those three facts about yourself

On a separate sheet of paper, write a paragraph explaining The three facts about yourself Why you chose to represent as you did (use elements and principles of art/design in your explanation) If you created a “ real ” artwork from this study, what would it look like? DUE: Start of class on Mon, Sept 25 th for discussion POINTS: 40 total possible (10 points for each section of the assignment based on level of completion)
