Reading Around The Text: A Reading Strategy

Reading Around The Text We will use this strategy to learn how to preview a text. We will activate our prior knowledge (what we know about the subject) and set a purpose for reading. Materials: SCOPE Magazine, with article “Hey You! Wake Up!” on Page 9 One Reading Around The Text sheet (R.A.T.)

The Six Steps of the Reading Around The Text Strategy 1. Describe the pictures. 2. Read the captions and write down what you learned 3.Look at the Charts, Graphs, and Maps. Write down the big idea. 4. Find the headings, subheadings, and vocabulary words. Write down the big idea. 5. Read the first and last paragraphs. 6. What questions do you think this article will answer?

Instructions (Please follow the Instructions procedure while you learn what to do.) Choose a partner. One partner is A, one partner is B. Partner A asks Partner B the first question. Partner B thinks about the answer, Partner A writes down what they say. Then you switch. *We are going to demonstrate this.*

Instructions When you get to question #5, Partner A reads the first paragraph, Partner B reads the second paragraph. When you have finished, write down your answers for Question #6 on the large sheet of paper we have labeled, “Set A Purpose For Reading.”

1st Period Setting A Purpose for Reading 1st Period Questions What should you do to get a good night’s sleep? How long do teenagers need to sleep? Why are teenagers tired? What keeps you from getting a good night’s sleep? How can schools expect people with lots of homework to get up early and function properly??

3rd Period – Setting a Purpose for Reading 1. Why do students have to wake up so early? Why do some people have trouble sleeping? What injuries occur from bad sleeping habits? Why do people not sleep? How many brain cells will you lose without enough sleep? Why do people not get enough sleep?

4th Period Setting a Purpose for Reading Can it fry your brain cells? Could you die if you don’t get enough sleep? Can a person really go 11 days without sleep? How to avoid from staying up all night? What’s a better idea that will help you go to sleep?

6th Period Setting a Purpose for Reading Why do students have to wake up so early for school? How many hours was Randy Gardner awake? Why does school start so early? How long can you go without sleep? How can this help teens manage sleep during the day? Why was he staying up late?

7th Period Setting a Purpose for Reading

Let’s Check Our Knowledge You will answer the questions on this sheet for a classwork grade. You are required to write three or more sentences for #9 and three or more sentences for #10. You may write on the back of the quiz or on your own paper.
