2. What? You are constantly predicting in your head the next word, the next sentence, the next paragraph, or the next chapter. You predict both before you start to read a text and while you are reading

3. How? 1.Using what you know about the world. Example: The baby couldn’t eat the apple because he didn’t have any ___________. (teeth)

4. 2. Using what you know about language. Example: The baby couldn’t eat the apple because he didn’t have any ________. * “any” is probably followed by a noun.

5. 3. Using visuals – photographs, drawings, charts What ideas are being presented?

6. 4. Use headings or subheadings What is the big idea?

7. 5.Using everything you have read so far in the text

8. Why? Ask questions. Give yourself a reason to read. If you are not predicting as you read, you will probably not understand the text completely.

9. Read around the Text 1.Look at the pictures. What ideas are being presented? 2.Look at the captions and read them. 3.Look at the maps, charts, bolded phrases and graphs. Discuss what information they present. 4.Look at the titles and headings. What is the big idea? 6.Ask questions. Give yourself a reason to read. 5.Read the first and last lines of each paragraph for more information.
