January 11, 2016 Last Week’s Happenings… Vocabulary News Articles Last week in order to review vocabulary words from lessons 1-5, students worked with a partner to create a newspaper article where they had to use at least 15 words from lessons 1-5. Lunch in the Classroom Last week students who met their goal in reading and in math for MAP testing earned to come down to the classroom and eat lunch! Lunch with Moms! Last week we had a great turnout for “Lunch with Moms!” Check out these pictures of some of our awesome moms! Those who couldn’t make it, feel free to come at any time!

2 Happening This Week… Grammar
Math Students will continue working on our multiplication unit. The test is this week. We will begin division in 1 week. Pathway 1: Solving multiplication using pictures, repeated addition, skip counting, and arrays Pathway 2: Multiplying a 1 digit number by a multiple of 10, Identifying patterns in the multiplication table, identifying unknown multiplication equations Pathway 3: Multiplication Properties (commutative, associative, distributive) Pathway 4: 1 and 2 step “x” word problems *Students who finish all pathways will be working on a PBL** Reading This week we will begin our series unit. Students will choose a series to read and be a part of a book club. Students will meet with their book club weekly and will also respond to discussion questions through blogging. Students will be bringing these books home each night as part of their reading homework. Students will be assigned a certain number of pages to read each day in class and they will read whatever they don’t finish in class as their reading homework. Students will learn this week about character traits, motivations, and feelings and how they contribute to the events in a story. Writing Students will finish up their research for their nonfiction newspaper articles. They will learn this week how to write good paragraphs. This means they begin with a main idea sentence and it is followed by several detail sentences. They will also learn how to write subheadings for their paragraphs and a good title. Grammar This week the students will learn about common nouns vs. proper nouns. They will learn that proper nouns name a specific person, place, or thing, and need to be capitalized. Science- This week we will begin a new unit. We will begin our unit on the Earth and the Universe. Students will learn about the sun and stars, planets, and other things in the solar system. Social Studies- We will finish with our unit on government. We will finish our mock city council debate and have our unit test on Thurs. Students also have their study guides due Tuesday. If your child would like to order, please bring it in by Friday of this week! Please make sure your child is getting started on their second quarter project that is due January 20. Please let me know if you come across any questions that you may have. We will be starting our division math unit on Monday, January 18, Students will take their multiplication unit test on Friday, January 15, All students must be finished with their multiplication pathways by this date. I have told students that they may take them home to work on to make sure they are completed by Friday. Attention: HELP NEEDED for our second quarter class store! On Wednesday, January 20 we will be having our second quarter class store. Please begin sending items in for the class store. We are completely out due to our Red Cress Genius Hour Project. Items of high interest include: mechanical pencils, cool erasers and grippers, notebooks, cool paper, stuffed animals, snacks, candy, drinks, toys, keychains, markers, twist up colored pencils, and books.
