2 Learning Targets (p.89) Today in class, I will…
Identify text features in informational texts as strategies to better comprehend ideas and information. Read informational texts to identify issues and questions. Identify factors that affect consumer choices.

3 Word Wall Vocab. Under vocabulary tab in your binder place your word wall handout, and write the following definition. Text Features: aspects of a text designed to help you locate, understand, and organize information. Example: glossary, table of contents, graphs, maps, bold words.

4 What’s the Difference? Based on your prior knowledge, how do informational (non-fiction) texts differ from fictional texts? Informational: based on facts, involve real people, events, or situations. Fictional: made-up stories, involve imaginary characters.

5 $211 Billion… (p.90) With your elbow buddy, read the informational text entitled, “$211 Billion and So Much to Buy” on pages While you read, highlight interesting or surprising facts.

7 Quick Write On a separate sheet of paper, answer the quick write using the RACE strategy. Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain How is advertising to young people different from other advertising? Hint: Use evidence from the article, “$211 Billion and So Much to Buy.”

Read the statements provided in the chart on page 93, and mark each statement as true or false based on your own knowledge. You will only mark in the “Before Reading” column.

9 “Facts about Marketing” (p.94)
Individually, you will read the informational text entitled, “Facts About Marketing to Children” on pages While you read, highlight interesting or surprising facts.

12 Persuade Me Read the article, “Should Chimps Have Rights,” and make a claim based on your opinion. Use the text features to help you understand the text, and use evidence from the text to support your claim.
