Reading Skills 101 Reading quiz! Time to get over your summer hang over!

Before you read, Survey the chapter: the title, headings, and subheadings captions under pictures, charts, graphs or maps review what terms you should be looking for introductory and concluding paragraphs Read the summary in the notes that are given to you online (where your terms are)

Question while you are surveying: Turn the title, headings, and/or subheadings into questions Ask yourself, "What do I already know about this subject?" Ask yourself, “What do I think this chapter will teach me that I do not already know?”

When you begin to Read: Look for answers to the questions you first raised Reread captions under pictures, graphs, etc. Note all the underlined, italicized, bold printed words or phrases Reduce your speed for difficult passages Stop and reread parts which are not clear Read only a section at a time and come up with a main idea for that section in your notes.

Memory Test Tell me your 6 th grade locker combination Finish these lyrics When I Gone, When I’m Gone….. You're gonna miss me when I'm gone You're gonna miss me by my hair You're gonna miss me everywhere Oh, you're gonna miss me when I'm gone We're up all night 'til the sun We're up all night to get some We're up all night for good fun We're up all night to get lucky Why were you able to know the end to these lyrics but you can’t remember your 6 th grade locker combo? How does memory work? Take this quiz and let’s see if we can get a definitive answer.

Your notes should look like this: – Date, Pages, Chapter Section heading-theirs and yours – your interpretation of the main ideas – something silly to help you remember the material...a silly title to the section? a silly pneumonic device? – create a question that forces the other students to think at a high level and apply the material from that section. End of reading summary in your own words. Make sure you have created 3 questions for the entire reading that put things together from the reading and beyond the reading (before and after the events discussed in reading) – You will also need to fill out the terms while you read.
