Veterinarian By Nicole Budde 5/8/14 1 st hour Career Tech

Introduction I chose a Veterinarian as my career because it allows me to work with and help animals out of injuries and sickness. "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." ~ Immanual Kant More than 75% are Companion animal veterinarians. How would it make you feel to know that you have saved a lot of animals life’s?

Nature of work Examine animals to diagnose their health problems Diagnose and treat animals for medical conditions Perform surgery on animals Advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments Prescribe medication

Working Conditions Working as a Vet takes physical and mental health. It can be indoor indoors and outdoors depending on what the animal is your treating and what its problem is. When you’re a Vet, hours are not flexible. They work long hours including the whole week and often the weekend. Usually 1 in 3 work more than 50 hours per week. The work environment can sometimes be emotionally stressful dealing with whimpering animals and anxious pet owners. Veterinarians risk being bitten sometimes leading to diseases.

TQA In order to be a vet you need a Doctoral or professional degree. I plan on going to Michigan State University or University of California, Davis. I’m going to need to take as much science classes as I can get and some additional math classes.

Job Outlook The job employment rate is 12% The rate is rising. I would like to find a job opening in California. There’s no particular business that I would want to work for.

$ My life style goals are completing college and being happy in my job. The average pay is $84,460. This fits my goal perfectly. My first purchase with this money will most likely be a house.

Back Up Career My back up career is Dentistry. Responsibilities… Remove decay from teeth and fill cavities Repair cracked or fractured teeth and remove teeth Straighten teeth to correct bite issues Place sealants or whitening agents on teeth Administer anesthetics to keep patients from feeling pain during procedures Write prescriptions for antibiotics or other medications Examine x rays of teeth, gums, the jaw, and nearby areas for problems Make models and measurements for dental appliances, such as dentures, to fit patients Teach patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care Working conditions… Being a Dentist is physical health It is indoor They work the full week and often weekends They wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.

Back up career continued… Training… Usually you need at least a bachelor's degree before entering dental school. I want to go to University of California san Francisco School of Dentistry. I should take courses in chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy, and mathematics.

Summary I still want to be a Veterinarian but I want to look into it more as well with Dentistry. The thing I look forward to in this career is diagnosing and treating animals. My least favorite thing I would have to do it perform surgery on animals but I would still do, I don’t have a problem with it. Something I learned about this career is that they work more than 50 hours a week.
