Ryan Wiegand 10/5/11 3 rd Hour

The fact is: the world needs doctors. Whether the economy is bad, or oil prices have sky rocketed, everyone always needs a doctor. Part of the reason I want to be a doctor is because I wish to help people and find medical problems so that others don’t have to deal with them. The thing that inspired me to become a doctor were all the medical television shows, specifically, House. The series house has helped me to want to become a doctor because in every episode, they have a patient who falls ill to some strange disease and it takes a while for the main character, House to figure out what is causing all these strange effects. I will be researching surgeons and all that they do inside of their job. In order to get a better understanding of this career field I will be researching the nature of work, working conditions, training, qualifications, and advancement, job outlook and earnings.

 Surgeons must always complete an operation the correct way.  Surgeons diagnose illnesses, prescribe and administer treatment for people.  Surgeons specialize in treatment of injuries, diseases, and deformities through operations.  Uses a variety of instruments  Examine patients, perform and interpret diagnostic tests, and counsel patients on preventive healthcare  Fix broken bones, skin, and deformities by performing surgery.

 The working conditions of a surgeon are both mental and physical because performing surgery on people is mentally grueling and you need to know what to do physically to fix their problem.  The workplace is usually indoor because surgeons work in hospitals.  Most surgeons work long irregular hours sometimes fifty hours a week.  90% of surgeons work part-time.  The environment would be inside of a hospital so it’s clean with people moving in and out of hallways.  But surgeons are inside of an operating room with specialized equipment and complicated instruments.

 To get to be a surgeon you must have at least eight years of school and be a resident of the area for 3-8 years.  I plan on going to college somewhere that is a good university, not a small two year college.  I would need to get a doctorate degree to be a doctor.  In high school I should be taking medical classes and health classes.  Things like those in high school would get me ready to take more advanced medical classes in college. Skin Cancer

 Jobs to be a surgeon are on the rise 22% from 2008 to 2018.  It is not very competitive.  I would like to work in a hospital somewhere in Colorado, maybe in Denver.  Not any place in particular but in Colorado.

 My lifestyle goals are to become a neurological surgeon.  The average earnings for a surgeon is $186,044 to $339,738.  This does fit my goals.  My first purchase with this money would be a very expensive car.

 My career that I would use as a back up would be a pilot in the Air National Guard.  Air National Guards protect the country and do things inside of the country to keep people safe.  Air National Guard has tough training and working conditions  I chose the Air National Guard because I want to help the country, and I would love to fly a plane.

 My feelings on being a Surgeon is that I believe in working on patients to help fix there problems no matter how small the problem may be. I also feel that doctors and surgeons will always be a very important part of our society as a whole and will be needed in the future no matter the economy. I look forward to surgery and operating on people. I do also think it would be a very difficult task to accomplish but I know I could do it. My least favorite thing I’m looking forward to would be using so many tools. If I have to memorize a lot of tools then if I forget what a few names are when it comes time for surgery, I’ll be in trouble. Overall, my learning experience has told me that to be a surgeon means you must train hard, be the best that you can and have strong nerves to be able to work under constant pressure.
