Core Concept Unit 1 Review

1. What is the difference between latitude and longitude? Latitude is the distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees Longitude is the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees

2. What are some features of place and region? Place includes human and nonhuman features, such as population and climate characteristics Region includes features that unify places

3. Why do map projections lead to distortion? Give a specific example. Projections map Earth’s round surface on a flat map. Projecting the round Earth onto a flat surface stretches or shrinks certain parts. This leads to distortion Mercator projection stretches areas near the poles so that they look bigger than they are

4. What does the scale bar of a map show? Shows how much space on a map represents a given distance on the land 5. How do aerial photographs and satellite images show Earth’s surface? What differences do you find between these types of images? Aerial photos show Earth’s surface in photos taken from the air Satellite images show Earth’s surface in photos taken from a satellite in orbit Satellite images can show a larger area of Earth than an aerial photos

6. What are the basic parts of a map, and what does each part show to readers? Compass rose- shows direction Scale bar- relates distance on the map to distance on real land Map key- explains the symbols and shading on the map Locator map- places the main map’s area within a larger area Title- tells the subject of the map Grid- shows latitude and longitude lines

7. What kind of map shows elevation? Physical map 8. What does a political map show? Shows political units, such as countries, states, details related to those units, such as major cities or capitals

9. Which kinds of maps could you use to chose a new city as your home 9. Which kinds of maps could you use to chose a new city as your home? How would you use them? You could use physical land or political maps A physical map would help you choose the landscape features of a new home Political map would help you choose a relative location close to or distant from other locations of interest Might use special-purpose map such as a highway map to evaluate transportation or climate

10. Which kinds or projections would best show the distance between your hometown and Washington D.C. on a map of the U.S? Sample– if hometown in central plains: A Robinson projection would probably be best as it would show the most accurate size and shape of the land A Mercator distorts the distance and an Equal-Area distorts shape

11. What can you learn from the latitude and longitude lines on a map? Helps readers locate places on a map easily Quickly help identify the hemispheres for readers, roughly locating a place in the context of the globe

12. Match each feature to the correct theme of geography: Very flat landscape place Four trains in and out of town everyday movement Factory waste enters a local river Human-environment interaction Large Hispanic-population across 3 states region 42˚S, 147˚ E location

Identify each part of the map 16. B 17. A 18. C 19. physical

Activity 4 1. What line divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? Equator 2. What line divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres? Prime Meridian 3. What 2 continents are completely in the Northern Hemisphere? North America and Europe

4. What 2 continents are completely in the Southern Hemisphere? Australia and Antarctica 5. What 2 continents are completely in the Western Hemisphere? North and South America 6. What continent is completely in the Eastern Hemisphere? Australia

7. What 4 continents are partly in the Western Hemisphere and partly in the Eastern Hemisphere? Europe, Africa, Asia and Antarctica 8. What 3 continents are partly in the Northern Hemisphere and partly in the Southern Hemisphere? South America, Africa, Asia

Activity 5 1. Latitude is the distance north or south of the Equator. True 2. Latitude lines are parallel. 3. Latitude is measured in miles. False 4. The equator is at 0˚latitude

5. The North Pole is 100˚ north latitude. False 6. Longitude is the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. True 7. Longitude lines meet at the North and South Poles. 8. The length of a degree of longitude is the same at any latitude
