Polish Starter What? A Polish specialist food shop Who? This is Radick, a Polish economic migrant living and working in Peterborough What? Peterborough, UK Why? Peterborough has over 25,000 Polish people living there. This shop serves that population.

Poland in the EU Poland joined the EU in 2004 When this happened, many Poles wanted to leave and come to the UK. Why do you think this was the case? The EU stands for the European Union. It is a group of countries whose governments work together. Countries benefit from closer relationships, protection and increased trade.

Economic Migration Economic migrants are people who move for money and work. The pull factors for Polish economic migrants include wages five times greater than they could get at home. Some come for seasonal jobs, such as vegetable and fruit picking. More qualified migrants may look for medical or education jobs. The typical Polish economic migrant is male and between the ages of 20 and 40.
