Magnets

Attraction  No, not that type of attraction!  Magnets have a powerful force that attracts or moves certain metals towards them! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHMSgKKi3jc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHMSgKKi3jc

Polarity  Every magnet has a North and South pole.  What do you know about the poles?  Watch your teacher demonstrate this with a bar magnet, a piece of paper and paper clips.  Hopefully, you drew the conclusion that the magnetic pull or attraction is strongest at the poles.  Draw this in your notes.

Like Poles  You felt the force of this the other day when you explored magnets.  Think, pair, share: What do you know happens when two like poles are close to each other?  They REPEL, or push away from each other.  Draw this in your notes.

Unlike Poles  Since “like poles” repel, what will happen with unlike poles?  Yes, they will ATTRACT or pull together.  “Opposites attract!”  Watch this clip to demonstrate the magnetic fields: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj0DFDf Qajw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj0DFDf Qajw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj0DFDf Qajw&feature=related

Repulsion  This word goes with “like poles”  A South pole will repel a South pole.  A North pole will repel a North pole.

Strength  The strength of a magnet is measured by the number of objects it can pick up.

Reflection  Take a moment to reflect- think of 2 to 3 things you learned today.  Hand up, Stand up, Pair up and share those things  Write down at least 2 to 3 things you learned today using complete sentences.
