Consumer access to the iPhone and tourism LO: To describe how global access to the iPhone and tourism varies To explain these global variations Starter activity Remind yourself of some key terms – mix and match the terms with their definitions

Recap part 2 - Pros and cons of globalisation: Economic development Employment generated in LEDCs and NICs Greater ecological awareness Opportunities to travel BUT Many global economic activities degrade the environment and overuse resources Globalisation works in favour of MEDCs at the expense of LEDCs Outsourcing labour impacts on job security in MEDCs Acculturation

The six countries which got the original iPhone Countries where the iPhone is now available We have already seen a map that shows which countries have access to Apple stores – was the global distribution even? USA UK ROI France Germany Austria In the first ‘wave’ of launches, the iPhone 5 was only available in 9 countries: USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore

How do you think tourist numbers differ globally? You will create a choropleth map using data in the next task.

An example of a choropleth map You will be using the data in the table to create a choropleth map that shows total spending by tourists by region per capita (US$). South East Asia11 Africa34 Eastern Europe61 South America75 Northern / central Asia 97 Middle East101 North America189 Japan238 Oceania610 West Europe667 1.Categorise the data into 4 or five groups (eg <US$50, US$50 – US$199, US$200 – US$399 etc) 2.Choose one colour and colour all regions apart from the lowest group as lightly as possible. 3.Using the same pencil apply slightly more pressure to all regions aside from the bottom two groups. 4.Continue this process until you apply the heaviest pressure to the highest group

Tasks – either complete task 1 or 2 and then tasks 3 and 4 1.In your opinion is globalisation good or bad? [8m] 2.Describe one advantage & one disadvantage of globalisation. [4m] 3.Use the map below to describe global access to the iPhone. [4m] 4.Create a choropleth map using the data in the table. Describe the pattern that your map shows. The six countries which got the original iPhone Countries where the iPhone is now available South East Asia11 Africa34 Eastern Europe61 South America75 Northern / central Asia 97 Middle East101 North America189 Japan238 Oceania610 West Europe667

iPhone tourism What common pattern or trend can be identified looking at consumer access to the iPhone and tourism? What reasons might exist for these trends? How might the following affect consumer choices and accessibility? Access to technology? Time? Cost of product / service?

Do these two pieces of information help at all? Access to internet as percentage of population Statutory paid holiday entitlement (these are in addition to public (bank) holidays aside from the UK) UK28 days Japan20 days Australia20 days Germany20 days France22 days Canada10 days India12 days China10 days USA0 days

Task 2 For each of these regions you should consider how the following could positively or negatively affect their access to products and services: time cost and money technology You may choose to draw a table or construct a spider diagram to help
