2 Polish Migrants in the UK
Today we are learning about… the pros and cons of polish migration and why many poles are now going back to Poland (flow reversal). By the end of the lesson… ALL can describe patterns of migration to the UK (Level 4) MOST will be able to explain why some migrants are returning home (Level 5) SOME will be able to give their own reasoned opinions on migration and explain the pros and cons (Level 6-7)

3 Polish Migration Poland joined the EU in 2004.
62% of EU migrants to the UK are Polish. There is lots of controversy over their presence in the UK. Lots of Poles are now going back to Poland.

4 Key Questions What are the pros and cons of migrant workers?
Why are some Poles returning home to Poland (flow reversal)? What has been the pattern of immigration into the UK? What has encouraged this? What Polish influences are there on British culture?

5 Levels Level 3 – name/list – “for jobs”
Level 4 – describe – “The Polish arrived in 2004.” Level 5 – explain – “The Polish arrived in 2004 because there was high unemployment in Poland.” Level 6 – explain in detail/compare – “The Polish arrived in the UK when Poland became a member of the EU in This is because the EU allows citizens to work in other EU countries, and unemployment was high in Poland. This is similar to the migration of Lithuanians.” Level 7 – evaluate/give opinions – “There are benefits to Poles migrating to the UK – they provide labour for low-skilled jobs which employers like because it saves them money. However British workers looking for similar jobs don’t like this because they feel that the migrants are taking UK jobs…”
